Noob Question...

Post » Wed Jul 06, 2011 7:36 pm

Hey Everyone :)
I just started playing over the weekend, and man is this game addicting :) Anyhow, I had a noob question in regards to the Powder Gangers prison (can't remember the area, but it is the prison near the begining). I had the quest to go kill Chavez and killed him, in the process though I became villified with the Powder Gangers. When I went to turn in the quest, I was of course attacked. So, what I did was cleared the whole prison since they pissed me off LOL Since I can't complete the quest because I killed Eddie, will this impact the game it all as far as further quests, etc? I kind of want to know now before I get much further. I just got to Novac and my motel room so I figured if I had to start over, it would be good to know now...

Also, since the prison is cleared. How does the karma impact me in regards to taking the stuff lying around the prison?

Thanks.

No, powder gangers are bad and should be killed (Unless you want to side with them for kicks) and no killing them will not impact any future quests.
Oh yeah, welcome to the forums :wavey:

Cool, thanks. I just wanted to make sure since it failed a quest when I killed Eddie. Oh, how about the karma? Is there a way to steal without impacting karma? Sorry for the noobish questions...

I killed everyone in the prison because I was bored. I was vilified by the Powder Gangers, so whenever I'd scroll over the NCRCF I'd say I was evil or hated to them. But despite that the area is still habitable as they do not respawn in the prison. You do however lose karma for stealing the things lying around because they are owned even though they are dead. No it will not affect the rest of the story line. This is the only role the Powder Gangers have in FNV.

The NCR, Caesar's Legion, Mr.House, and Yes Man are the only major 'factions' you have to worry about when playing FNV. Everything else is just side quests. But of course some side quests will help with the entire ending of the game. I'd share more but since you're new to the game I don't want to spoil it for you. Just play the game as you normally good and do as many side quests as you want, they're fun and it helps with the immersion of the game.

Think of it, should stealing make karma better? No there isn't a way to make it not bad when you steal but tbh karma barely effects the game besides the ending video and your title.

There are more than enough things in this game that give you Good Karma to balance out minor thefts. To that end, there is more than enough stuff to take that is not marked as owned by the game that you can avoid Bad Karma. In fact, even if you play a really good character, there are places where you have to commit some minor crimes to complete the quest, so you can't get around some bad karma if your trying to complete the game.

Here is a hint for the Powder Grangers, if you want to do with the quests surrounding the NCR Prison, don't do the Shootout Quest in Goodsprings until after you have done the Prison Quests. Then go back and do the Shootout part of the Tutorial.

I don't get why stealing from evil people nets you negative karma. The whole thing of karma is things will come back at you. People like PG, they loot and hit caravans, yet when you steal their tin can, it makes you the bad guy? I remember in F3, you could steal from a lot of "evil" people.

/headdesk Why oh why did I not think of that! :banghead: .

As to why the items are bad karma if you steal them? I use to think its because the jail belongs to the NCR, and thus the items belong to the NCR... However I think it comes down to game mechanics.

There is no marker in game that would allow an item to change its karma tag by doing quests. Thus it is either always marked Bad Karma, or No Karma. If it was no karma then the player who sides with the Powder Gangers would have free range of taking anything you want from them with no repercussions. That is why if you side the NCR stealing from The Legion is bad, and vice versa.

Its the only thing that seems to fit. Later on in the game you can help a group move, and after they are gone you still can't pick up what they left behind, and have no desire to return for.

Its certainly not because the items in the NCRCF belong to the NCR. They don't care if you take them.
What I find annoying is you can kill someone, take their stuff they are carrying and get good karma but if you pick up the cup they were drinking from thats bad karma
That and the inconsistency with whether items are labelled as belonging to someone or not. Theres many cases where they clearly are used by people in that area but don't count as stealing if taken

As implemented in NV, 'karma' is simply a minor annoyance, and of no real importance. I've tried evil characters, and it is real_hard_work playing through the game and maintaining even a minor level of 'badness', unless you completely avoid killing evil creatures, humanoids or ghouls (most of them) and doing any quests. Kinda limits your gaming options. And for what gain? None, that I ever discovered. Pointless.

Its worse than that :(... You can enter the casino in Primm, stoop down and pick up a discarded cigarette off of the ground, and the entire casino draws guns and starts shooting to kill. :bonk:

Heh , what's confusing is you actually get good karma for killing most PGers and then lose karma for stealing their stuff . That part doesn't make sense. They were so bad that killing them was a good thing and yet I'm vilified if I take the stuff they wont be needing anymore because they are dead...???

To OP : The karma loss for stealing things is slight. If you do good deeds most of the time but snatch a few items here and there, you'll still be a good karma character. If you want bad karma you'll really have to work for it .

Most likely because even if only slight, you still have the option of aligning yourself with them, which can explain the loss of karma for stealing from themm.
