I don't know what to make of the 360 kinect now...

Post » Sat Jul 09, 2011 12:33 pm

First off,360 owner here.

Now when I saw Wii fit,I mocked it like hell as adding my not for real gamers Wii list.

Today,I saw ad for UFC Personal Trainer for the kinect ,and am not to sure what to make of it,as a gamer and a UFC fan.

So,what do you make of if?

I will say,you can,as advlts, discuss this this without console bashing....

It's always been very "meh" to me, but some of the stuff at E3 this year was kind of cool. Except for the fun labs, and that sesame street and Star Wars garbage.

If you look at how the human body has developed, you can understand why we have feet and why we have arms.

The development of the controller is similar to human evolution in the sense that as future generation consoles and games come out, the controls become completely second nature. Some games like Guitar hero or Skate require you to adapt to their unique playstyles but for the most part, you're still using the same tools (the buttons, the anolog sticks) to complete whatever it is you're doing.

Making all of this motionless just starts the evolution back at the ground. We need to adapt it to games and make it second nature. To make it easily adaptable, we truly have to become the controller, so there is no need to learn anything. Microsoft throws around that motto with such ease and I think its something that needs tremendous work before it can be even said.

All that aside, I own an a kinect and don't use it at all. Ubisoft's new rainbow six looks interesting as you can tear a gun apart using motions, but apart from that, the combat looked terrible and was bugging out on stage..

It doesn't fit the style of the games I like to play, and I hate it when they try to adapt a control scheme to a situation it doesn't work for. (like many Wii games with forced motion controls that would work better without them)

Meh it all seems pretty gimmicky now

All of these motion control gaming things just seem kinda clunky right now. I'd consider it more if it's still around after a few years and it doesn't seem as hokey.

I saw that commercial, too. I figure you can do the same thing with an exercise video/dvd.

A good side maybe that it keeps people wanting some exercise, and with no controllers may stick with the console and get a kinect...

I guess. Seems awful expensive for exercise though. Unless you (as in, in general, not as in you) already have a kinect.

Video games are a bad substitute for exercise. If you're going to exercise, be serious about it.

Same thing with the Wii Fit; it's not an exercise tool, it's a toy.

I wouldn't toss exercise games, particularly the Kinect ones, aside quite so quickly. They can be fantastic cardio workouts.

Naturally you still need to lift weights if you want to get in shape, but still, it's a good start.

You don't need a game for that though. Like someone said, an exercise video can give the same guidance... or walking/jogging, which is free.

Sure, but a videogame can at least partially mitigate one of the flaws with exercising for any significant amount of time, i.e. being unspeakably boring.
