What are your interests?

I am a Business major, just finished lower division so i am going into upper division this upcoming semester. More specifically im doing Accounting, because i've heard that no matter how bad the economy gets there will always be a need for accountants. So im trying to give myself the best chance because i would be lost after school if i cant make money I AM NOT going to go back home.

What major do you guys want to be? Are in the process of becoming? Or have already graduated with?

From your experience do you have any suggestions for someone who might be interested in the same field as you?

Do you have any questions you would like to ask someone who has already experienced what you are interested in?

All of my advisors suggest for me to join a club and use our campuses career center and advisors for help. My plan is to join the business club so i can meet more people in the same area as i am, and also get some extra knowledge from the professor who is in charge and runs things who has real world experience. And i am also going to keep an eye out for job openings/internships more from now on. But if there are any business majors out there, especially accounting, that have any suggestions for me I would appreciate you input!

I will be a senior in high school this year. After HS, I plan to go to college to go for Information Assurance or Computer Engineering courses.

I have my A+ Certification, as well as a Microsoft Office Specialist Certification (Office 2010). In December I will be taking the CCNA certification exam.

I'll be going into my final year of college in August, and I'm currently majoring in Criminal Justice/Criminology. Hopefully, once I graduate I will be able to get a job in law enforcement (Patrol Officer/Correctional Officer) and eventually reach my goal of joining the FBI.

You have to pay back loans and not everyone can afford to pay back loans.

I took two semesters at college paid for completely by grants, not scholarships, grants. Pell Grants to be specific. The state gave me ~6 grand a semester to pay for everything. It's available to anyone, rich or poor.

EDIT: You don't pay back grants unless you drop out of school.

I am far, far, far from being rich. As a matter of a fact, once I graduate I will be in a world of debt from all of the loans and crap that I have. As of this minute, I owe my school more money than I have in my bank account for a study abroad trip that I wasn't able to go on due to a medical emergency in my family. If that is your idea of rich, then I must be filthy rich!

Computer science, but I've been out of college for some time now. My advice to others considering something similar: don't specialize too much in college. Make sure you learn good software development fundamentals. You're going to learn the better part of the implementation details on the job, anyway.

Did you really skip all the info tech categories on a video game forum?

Information Systems major (haven't decided yet on whether to choose Database or Network as my focus though), Computer Science Minor. For the past semester, though, I've been wanting to throw in Computer Engineering too >_<

Jesus, you spout this [censored] everytime someone mentions college or university. But hey, keep [censored]ing, I'm gonna go hit the sack, cause I gotta get up early to head to school, then head to work for 8 hours after.

Yes it is expensive, and yes it is it will put anyone without rich parents (make that rich parents who pay for everything for their kids) into debt. But I've managed to save every penny I could spare over the past years, and the pay from my current job helps me scraqe by.

Oh, lawd, please do databases. ORM is so broken with set-based SQL-style databases. We need a new standard. :P

RSI is serious business.

And thus non-RDMS and OODMS become the norm with a whole new set of headaches :P

Anything to kill off the proliferation of SQLite in situations where it really shouldn't be the backend, though. If your program is in need of a database, give it a proper one, please (I'm looking at you, Spiceworks).

Well I'm majoring in 3d modeling/ animation, and have a year of college down so far. I have plenty of other interests but 3d modelling is one of the few things among them that I will actually enjoy doing for a living.

Oh, is student loan debt no longer a thing now? And my parents are rich all of a sudden? ...And every other college student on earth also has rich parents all of a sudden? ...How did you escape the matrix, and can you please teach me how to do the same so I can go to your wonderful world of cheap colleges and rich everybody?

Jesus, you spout this [censored] everytime someone mentions college or university. But hey, keep [censored]ing, I'm gonna go hit the sack, cause I gotta get up early to head to school, then head to work for 8 hours after.

Seriously. It's actually rather insulting, but I doubt he cares. Harumph, I say good fellow, to cheer ourselves up I propose we get our drivers to bring us into town so we can laugh at the poor people. Oh it will be such fun!

Mechanical Engineer alumni. MBA Degree to add. I'm working as an Engineer now. Considering going back to venture off into different areas.

All I can say is, make lots of friends (serious individuals that are goal-minded obviously) and establish connections with classmates. Not only will it help during your college years, but It can really help out later on after you're done with college too. Maintain contacts with professors, counselors, chairmen/women that can help you with your future as well.

Start looking for internships when you're within a couple years of graduating. Experience will be important, but it also allows you to network with people that are doing the work related to your field. If you know someone at a workplace you want to work at, it will be easier to get a job if one is available and if that person has leverage. These days, it's not just about what you know, but who you know.
