How do I amuse myself?

Post » Fri Jul 22, 2011 5:11 pm

I used to be a lifeguard. I had to sit on a chair and watch people in the baking Alabama sun for hours. No phones allowed on stand. I just sang songs in my head and sometimes hummed them. I was still bored.

Try staring at the sun for as long as you can, time yourself, then keep on trying to beat your record? Bad idea, abort, abort!

Try banging your head against the wall for hours on end while singing " i'm walking on sunshine " with your bottle balanced on your nose and see what happens.

I promise it will be absolutely safe.

And if that fails then think about Skyrim or something

Frankly, I don't think I can top this.

I already do this to an extent with the level design I do in Source, but it's frustrating thinking of ideas and not being able to implement them until hours later after work, by which time I'm usually not in the mood.

Perhaps you're doing it with the wrong subject matter? Level design is fairly technical stuff. I'd consider instead a creative avenue, like brainstorming and eventually even writing a short story in your head.

This. Surely you can smuggle in a phone? You can just hide it whenever customers/other staff come along.

Someone got fired on the spot for having a phone with them the other day. I don't want to take that risk

Well in that case you're just going to have to constantly hum the tune to All Alone by the Gorillaz.

Edit: Are you allowed to bring a magazine or other reading material?

Keep leveling up your ninja focus to where you can still do your job but mentally aren't there. Leaves room for excessive daydreaming, future planning, and your zombie contingency plan .respectfully.

This would work.

When I'm in a situation like that, I like to write stories in my head. Or sometimes I will narrate what I'm doing. It's also fun to spot an interesting person and make up facts about them, what they're doing, their family, etc.

Of course if you're not a fan of creativity none of those work very well  Good luck!
