Does this regard only authors of fiction and such? If not, Friedrich Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil is a very interesting work.

To name a few of my favorite I'd say R.A. Salvatore, Margit Sandemo, George R.R. Martin, J.K. Rowling, John R.R. Tolkein, Orson Scott Card, Brent Weeks, Christie Golden... I could go on but...

Do not make me choose D: I can′t!

G.R.R.M.
I've been disappointed by his more recent Ice and Fire works, but books 1-3 of that series, and many of his short stories and their worlds and characters -- Tuf, Fevre Dream, and others -- blow most everything else out of the water.

Robert E. Howard, Pratchett, Tolkien, and some others aren't far behind.

I suppose with a name like mine I'd have to say Terry Pratchett, even though I'm a few books behind now (darn lack of concentration).

Other than him, the usual suspects: Tolkien, GRRM (at least his first major novel--I forget the name now, sorry; couldn't quite get into the second, but that could be my concentration again), even Raymond Feist was really good back in the day, before he claimed his books could write themselves or some such nonsense; but regardless, Magician and quite a few of the subsequent novels were a thoroughly enjoyable read. Oh, and Douglas Adams of course: Adams could be very good or very bad and tended to erratically veer between the two poles, but when he was on top form, he was very good.

Michel Foucault - genius. Brilliant mind, fantastic philosopher, great writer.

As for fiction writers, my favourite at the moment is China Mieville. I've just recently read his latest two books (Kraken and Embassytown) and while they both count as works of fantasty, they're about as different as two books can be within the same genre. But both are amazingly written and have gripping stories. I've also read a couple of great books by Scarlett Thomas in the last year. She's less well known, and writes books on the line between fantasy/sci-fi and realism with a lot of input from ideas from science and philosophy - you should check them out, starting with PopCo or Our Tragic Universe.

I also like Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Philip K. dike, Ian Rankin, Slavoj Zizek, Nietzche, Jean Baudrillard, H. P. Lovecraft and Alan Moore.

I'm not sure I can really forgive Michael Moorcock for his bizarre poetry readings on some Hawkwind recordings. Maybe his actual written work is better...

I always thought the similarities between Elric and Geralt of Rivia were interesting, too. But maybe that's just me.

snip

I didn't think anybody on here would be listing any post-modern/post-structuralist/etc authors on here. Philosophy texts in general seem to escape my understanding; I always seem to have a better time reading condensed overviews of whatever author's particular viewpoints were, but a lot of their actual writing just confounds me to no end. That said, I probably haven't tried hard enough or perused enough books. I should give Zizek a try; if his writing is as engaging as his interviews and speeches, I think I could manage with him.

Anyway, I guess I would say my favorite authors are Vonnegut and Dostoyevsky.

Question the nature of your orders

I could never understand the whole thing about "use your wheels, it is what they are for" - though I suspect it was only ever meant to evoke a "...?!" response!

Alan Moore.

Alan Moore

Bloody Alan Moore. Is he ever going to finish the Halo Jones saga? It must be getting on for 30 years now, which is a long time to get in a strop about contractual wranglings...

I absolutely loved Oryx and Crake. I had a huge chunk of Year of the Flood before stopping... and I honestly don't know why I stopped in the first place. *shrug*
