Getting over fear

Post » Tue Aug 02, 2011 3:26 pm

I once had a fear of spiders, so do you know what I did? I punched one in the face with my bare hand!

Yes, kinda brutal and I had to wash my hand really hard to get all the gunk out, but I never feared a spider again. So, just go to the hospital and do the equalivent of punching a spider in the face with your bare hand to the hospital. (*Note: Do not shoot up the hospital, those people are trying to help you.*)

Just go.

do you know how hard that is? like really

Well to start I would anolyze why you are afraid of hospitals. Is it the doctors? The antiseptic smell? Bad memories of a previous visit? That is important to understand, because then you address your real fear. And while the earlier comment about pretending to be in a video game may have been in jest (at least in part) there is some merit in the act of disassociation. If someone who is afraid of, lets say snakes, were to view snakes through a camera they would become more comfortable as it makes it feel as if they are not really there. Though I'm not sure a doctor would diagnose you via make believe video conference.

the last five times ive gone someone i cared about died or became a vegatable
and its the cleanness it scares me

Yeah becuase its that easy to get over phobias/anxiety. Allthough in this case not going in could have far worse conseqences.
Nobody said it'd be easy, but that's the only way to conquer a fear: To do what you're afraid of. One of the best ways to spend your time is to actively seek out fears you have and overcome them.

Edit: Silver, unless you want to try correcting the problems with your hand at home you're going to have to walk into a hospital. There's no tip or magic you can do to overcome. If you don't want to do that then you're screwed, pure and simple.

If you think you'd need the moral support and he's willing to go, then by all means, yes.

Or better yet, injure Matt seriously enough so he must go to the hospital with you.

Seek out training amongst the League of Shadows. Once this is done, walk into a hospital and embrace all the doctors. From that point on, you will no longer be known as that guy that post alot of topics on the Bethesda. You will become a legend, Mr.Eagle. A legend.

Im afraid of crowds and, well, most social gatherings. I got over my fear by wearing sunglasses. I feel better when people cant see my eyes.

I honestly have no idea how we can really help except that you should definitely get some support from someone who understands your fear and is better able to help you than we are.

Get someone to take you to the hospital, cause if you think something's wrong it probably is. I remember when I broke my hand, I spent half the day pretending it wasn't even though I knew it was. It wasn't fun.

Also, this thread reminds me of a (darkly) funny quote from Warren Zevon, who ended up getting lung cancer, on his fear of doctors: "I might have made a tactical error not going to a physician for 20 years. It was one of those phobias that didn't pay off."

i hate hospitals as well. it helps if you find a cute nurse and just focus on an area of her body. thats what i did whenever i had to visit my grandparents in the hospital. just make sure not to stare too much or they think its creepy. use prolonged glances.

Just do it. Like Nike.

I'm afraid of that horrible jello they force fed me for 2 weeks.
Also, I think hospitals are the most creepy place to be overnight.
