PS3 Yellow Light of Death

Post » Thu Aug 04, 2011 11:50 am

Well, I knew the PS3 was going downhill. Random freezes, problems with games and such. I was, funny enough, getting a USB this weekend and backing up all of my save games. Seems my PS3 had different idea's. I was wondering if there was a way to get the HD out of the PS3 and back up my save games onto my PC...Or at least to a friends Portable HD or a thumb drive? I'm fairly desperate. xD I have thousands of hours of PS1 and PS2 game saves on there in addition to the PS3 saves. Thanks in advance!

You should check the PS3 forums about this issue because there is a way to get the HD out of there. However i'm not sure about the newer models since the old models had an HD access port on their side. After removing the HD from the side you could put it into an HD enclosure then get the files off the HD. I forget what the Yellow Light Of Death means though not sure if its the processor, the BR diode, or the cooling fan having problems.

Mine isn't launch. Though it is an 80 GB Backward Compatible model.

The HDD will be formatted if you try to connect it to a PC or different PS3. Your only option is to reflow it (i.e. bake it, can find guides and such on Google) and hope that it powers on long enough to make a backup of your data.

I always remembered it as the hard drive being formatted whenever inserted into a PS3...

If you are feeling brave I've heard people have had success fixing their YLOD by using a heat gun to reflow the PS3's GPU.

Does anyone know why sony would want to put in an unattainable hd, it really hinders options.

Part of the reason I chose to get the Xbox is because I had heard of how the RROD situation required them to provide service if your Xbox got it. At the time I didn't know about the Yellow light of death but I knew Microsoft was providing their service for free. It's a little disappointing to see these consoles go down like that and then you possibly have to pay a fee to get it fixed (for their faulty merchandise).

I'm more impressed with my PS2 slim and how it's still going strong than I am with any of the current generation consoles.

Yeah, the hard drive in the PS3 is encrypted and will only work on one specific PS3 or it will have to be reformatted.

Yeah, the early models of this console generation generated too much heat, while the previous generation had no overheating issues at all. At worst the optical drive laser could get messed up, and that can happen to this generation too.

Fortunately, the current 360/PS3 slim models consume less than half (~80W) as much electricity as the launch 360/PS3 models (~200W) so they also generate considerably less heat.

I miss the good old days when a console ran cool enough so it didn't need to have fans :P

That is one problem I do have with my ps2 though

When the fan kicks in it makes this horrible buzzing sound so I tend to quit when it turns on

Heh, yeah. I belive the PSOne is the last console that was fanless. I have a PSOne and it still works flawlessly, as do all my older technical stuff. My computers from the 80s works just fine too, but does my PC motherboard from 2005 still work? Of course not :meh:

Oh man I didn't think of that

I should bust out my http://justacoincidence.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/psone.jpg that thing was awesome! It didn't get much play time from me because I got my ps2 the next year but my dad has it (though he doesn't play it anymore).

I got YLOD a while back and tried everything - nothing worked, including using the heatgun on the motherboard itself. (It was a major pain to disassemble the thing.) I did save my hard drive in the hopes that someone will write a program to copy data from it to a new Ps3. Maybe you'll have better luck than I did, but don't hold your breath.
