Are there really no animal shelters in Norway?

Post » Fri Aug 05, 2011 12:44 am

On another forum I'm on someone has said they had to have their cat put to sleep because she was destroying the house and there aren't any animal shelters in Norway?

Now when I do a search for this all I'm getting is bloomin Norway, Maine. Possibly due to me search for 'animal shelter' which is a bit of an Americanism.

And since I don't know any Norwegians to ask personally, I put it to you guys on the forum. Are there really no such things as animal shelters in Norway???

Perhaps.

But perhaps there aren't any animals in Norway either.

There are a least wild caribou. And polar bears, maybe, in the very extreme north.

Yeah, what Freddo said.

Also, technically we do have polar bears here, but they are only located on Svalbard which isn't a part of mainland Norway.

There are no animal shelters in Norway because after hundreds of years, not even the Norse themselves can tell the difference between a bearded Norseman and a bear.

There are a lot of animal shelters here, at least in the south. I can think of 3 within a 10 minutes drive from where I live. Don't know about the far north thought...

There are, anyone who says different is either a liar or misinformed. I can't think of any specifically, but there are various organizations in Norway for the protection of animals, namely "Dyrebeskytellsen" (The Animal Protection directly translated). So yes, we do have shelters in Norway, though I have never needed to deal with one personally so I can't really name any specific examples.

While this is true, we do in fact have shelters.

EDIT: And no, we do not have Polar Bears on mainland Norway, there are polar bears on Svalbard however which is land claimed by Norway.
