What do you want to see more Video Games Developers doing?

Post » Sun Aug 07, 2011 8:45 pm

Just wondering...What do you guys want developers to do more or less with games?

My response:

I really want them to start making video games more diverse. I'm tired of all of these half baked FPS.

I always hope that they aim to make more new titles popular. It kind of does get annoying when every popular game is "something something 7" or "something something 11".

So what do you guys want developers to start doing?

EDIT: Something I really want them to stop doing, is making the games cross platform. It is so boring when every console has every game. Look at the 360, the number of exclusives for the console is slowly fading away. And PS3 has lost some good exclusives too. Now I don't want EVERY game to be exclusive, I just wish that there were more exclusives....well more GOOD exclusives

Xbox 360 Lost :

Bioshock, Dead Rising, Ninja Gaiden, Mass Effect, Limbo.ect ect ect. I mean those five games alone give the 360 alot more cred

PS3 Lost:

Dark Souls, GTA 4, Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4 and a few more. They have been doing good with producing more exclusive though, Good for them

I too am tired of FPS games. For that matter overly violent games where the main objective is to point at something and through some process make that something disappear, as I once heard FPS games described. Maybe it was yahtzee...

Anyways I want to see more things like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flower_%28video_game%29 and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journey_%282011_video_game%29. Games that tell a story without the need for words, without the need for guns, and without the need for sitting you down and spelling out "this is what's going on". We always say we like the story in games and it feels like that's often misconstrued as "we like walls of text". Take Torchlight for example. The whole story was given to us flatly as paragraphs on loading screens, not what I call a proper delivery. The story should be so much a part of the game that it IS the game, not some break FROM the game.

Communicate with the fans. It makes them seem much more like people and less like machines who just do what the publishers want.

Don't knock it 'till you've tried it. I thought the same thing until I got the demo and actually played it, and I went and bought it seconds later.

I want multiplatform developers to develop fully for each platform they develop for, not just port the game over.

I want more games like Metal Gear Solid 4. Hours and hours of fun, solid, single player gaming with awesome story. And then there's an online service shoved somewhere in there that you didn't know about until two months after you got the game (at least that was the way it was in the U.S., I think MGO is it's own release in Japan?).

EDIT: I wish more developers would optimize for the PS3. Usually cross platform games look better on the XBox 360.

  • Start paying attention to your fans, learn to take criticism to heart and perhaps change how they're doing things. We're the ones buying your games, it's a good idea to make us happy.

  • Involve the fans more. Sort of goes with the last one, but taken a step further. Capcom did this pretty well with Mega Man Legends 3, aside from the whole cancelling the game part. Involve the fans after you're sure the game will see release.

  • Make games without assuming that gamers are morons. A little depth isn't a bad thing, make the people playing your games use their brains a little bit rather than enabling gamers to turn them off completely.

  • Stop trying to make your titles appeal to everyone. We get it, you want it to sell to as many people as possible, but pulling elements from completely unrelated genres/games just because it works elsewhere isn't always the way to go about it.

I want multiplatform developers to develop fully for each platform they develop for, not just port the game over.

That would end up being so expensive though, and there's nothing wrong with a port done properly.

I think Shadow of the Colossus is the best example of this done well. There was little dialogue, no walls of text explaining what was going on, yet it has one of my favorite stories in gaming.

As far as a creative way of telling the story to the players or getting it to the players in a neat fashion, I definately think you would like Bastion for the 360 and Windows. The narrative is told throughout the game. As you are playing. And the artwork is pretty snazzy.

The narrator's voice is cool too.

Metal Gear Solid :P

I love games like that. There's a whole battle going on around you, but you can just ignore it and crawl past everyone and not even notice the awesomeness going on around you! Unless you want to fight. Then just pick your weapon and go crazy.

Yes Metal Gear Solid is awesome, I'm going to get Metal Gear Solid Rising...that game is going to be amazing. Don't let the trailer fool you, it is a stealth game and it has been confirmed that you can beat the game without killing anyone. But I really hope there is some really cool stealth gameplay in that game.

* Have a bit more co-op in games. Co-op as in Portal and Splinter Cell. Not just the single player with a second player plopped right in.

Really it's a hard choice since I don't have a job atm and can't buy some some games. However concerning the MMO market I really want to see an about-face on these current issues:

  • One Stat Assignment
  • Casual Gameplay Centric
  • Reduced Content
  • Extremism
  • Quick Instances

Right now the biggest thing that is angering me in the MMO world is "Dumbing Down" of content. One thing is the stat issue that is currently plaging games due to casual players saturating the MMO market. One game I really loved playing was EQ2 and I thought about going back to it after taking a break. Sadly I found out it was practically destroyed because the casual players had butchered it. Now it seems the current MMO market trend wants to make players focus on 2 stats instead of 3 or more because the casual players whine "It's too hard."

Personally I really want to think when building my characters having to round them out with certain particular stats so they are effective in one area or another. After that it would be great to see content that is more group oriented since MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online instead of Massively Casual Online. It's bad of me to say this, but you want a single player game with the ability to chat with friends get a console and add people to your friends list. Don't go invading MMO games then cry that they are too hard and you want a solo game with chat mechanics.

Cut it out with the realistic nonsense. Realistic art style, realistic physics, realistic characters. Seems to me like developers use the word realistic as a excuse to make the games easier to make.

I want something insane. Over the top. Imaginative, creative. I WANT TO GO CRAZY!

I want more 4X Turn Based space games. While I am happy new ones have come out, I don't really care for Real Time. The saving grace is pause anywhere, but still love the TBS games.

Also stop "streamling" the games. Just look at Oblivion and Civilization 5. Hell even Civ Rev is moe complicated than Civ V. Here is hoping Skyrim is not more "streamlined" than Oblivion.

I also don't want to see titles released every year. We have what, TES V in 20 years and already have Fable 3 in what 5 years? Same for CoD series etc etc. At least Bethesda is not like EA releasing their games every year with a new sequal.

i want more adventure games. not point-and-clicks, not slideshow pixel hunts - real-time adventure games. games where the focus is almost entirely on exploring, solving puzzles, and interacting with characters and the environment, without the focus on combat that every game feels is mandatory. stuff like Amnesia and Penumbra, but with less survival horror. stuff like Hotel Dusk and Last Window, but more open.

interesting settings that aren't just based entirely on the real world or on Western fantasy, and interesting stories that take the player's choices over the course of the game into account in determining how the story plays out and how the world reacts to those choices. interesting art direction that isn't cartoony but also isn't necessarily photorealistic; stuff like Journey looks incredible, or more realistically, stuff like Brink and Dishonored.

overall i'm generally pleased with the direction the industry is moving. there's a lot of fear of sudden innovation, yes, but at the same time genre lines are blurring more and more each year, so there's still a lot of evolution happening - just very gradually.

the biggest problem i've got with games right now is linearity without purpose. there's nothing inherently wrong with linearity, but too many games focus more on TELLING a story than letting the player EXPERIENCE that story, and as games begin to focus more on having stories that stand out, this starts to be a problem. the one thing that video games have over film as a medium for storytelling is their interactivity. more and more developers are starting to realize this, letting player choice play a more active role in determining how things progress, but there's still a lot of games that are trying too hard to be movies.
