I've never seen the appeal of gaming mice. What's wrong with a regular mouse? Is it really worth paying extra?

And like Johnny3Tears said, I'd never use a wireless mouse for gaming.

Neither would I. Although corded mice often drive me nuts with their propensity to snag on everything, at least they work: I've had numerous problems with wireless mice randomly locking up or behaving erratically. Usually just for a few seconds, but it's enough to make gaming annoying.

the mouse pictured looks ok but -personally- I wouldn't buy it because it doesn't even say what brand it is & Amazon.com couldn't find that mouse.

I have used a wireless mouse for gaming before. It was this one

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Cordless-Optical-Notebooks-Scarlet/dp/B0028K2TUO/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1312902834&sr=8-19

not really fancy but it worked well once I got used to the feel of it. only downside was that batteries didn't last long.

Oh yeah, that too. I've barely been using my wired mouse for six months but I'd forgotten about the battery problem. Mine was rechargeable and Logitech claimed somewhat optimistically that a full charge should last (I think) at least seven days, but if I forgot to leave mine on charge over night it would start to get pretty low by the second day and would definitely run out of juice by the third. Being quite forgetful, that was a frequent annoyance. Edit: also forgot to mention that the newer cradles and/or contacts are quite poor quality, so half the time, even when you think you've left it on charge, you haven't. It can take some quite protracted wiggling to get it to charge properly.

It's worth it to some people. I really like having all the extra buttons and tilt wheel on my mouse. I use the tilt wheel for various things in games and a forward / back button for my Internet browser. I use the thumb buttons for vent, TS3, and melee.

However OP http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/02/does-dpi-matter-in-gaming-mice-one-mouse-maker-says-no.ars. Just looks at reviews if you aren't sure about the mouse. And to reiterate I wouldn't bother with a wireless mouse for games. I really like my G500 depending on your price range it's worth looking at.

A gaming mouse is a marketing strategy and nothing else.

A gaming mouse is no more efficient than a regular mouse.

I would rather use my £7 alba mouse than anything else.. no matter what label you give it.

and wired > wireless always.

I don't know what sort of wireless mouse my grandparents have but they don't have to turn it off and it seems to last for months. I think it only uses power when its being moved or something but it is always at least a month before they have to change them again.

I use a standard wireless mouse and keyboard for gaming. I have no erratic behavior, there is no lag, and the charge lasts for months.

There isn't really any appeal to have a gaming mouse unless you're playing a game competitively like World of Warcraft where you need a hotkey for every situation.

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/keyboards/keyboard-mice-combos/devices/2963 is what I've been using for over a year now, and it works just fine for my Desktop. It has great range, doesn't glitch up, and hell, the paint on the mouse hasn't even started to wear away yet from heavy use. It's nothing fancy, but it's pretty cheap compared to others. The keyboard doesn't have a backlight, and the mouse doesn't have all of the fancy side buttons, but the charge for each lasts months with standard AA and AAA batteries. And they both show when they're low on battery, so I won't be playing a game one day and it suddenly craps out on me in a bad spot.

The downside is that it has one of those big bulky USB receivers with a cord. But I play on a desktop, so I really don't mind. It just sits under my monitor and has convenient lights to let me know if I accidentally left Caps Lock on. Wouldn't work as well on my laptop where portability is essential, but for that I bought a simple compact bluetooth mouse, and no other keyboard required. I don't even need to bother with any sort of physical connection. The bluetooth is a bit glitchy every once in a while though, and it doesn't work until the driver starts, but the glitchiness is nothing more than a response time delayed by milliseconds.

I had never seen the difference until we had to make sure a configuration stayed in QuakeLive the other day. The player in question had the settings set in such a way that we could barely turn to shoot. Turns out that his mouse was about 2000+ more DPI than the ones we had plugged in, and that's what made it playable for him. It was the first time in my life that I didn't think DPI settings on mice were useless.

I, personally, wouldn't buy an unbranded mouse from ebay simply because there is no professional support in case it breaks soon.

For the record, mine was a Logitech Revolution MX; I've heard other people have pretty much the same problems, including other nasties like the coating peeling off and so on: shame, their quality was top notch a couple of years back but seems to have really gone downhill, unless the Revolution MX was just a real lemon (which I find unlikely since it was apparently their flagship product).

It also gave me a really bad RSI-type problem with my thumb, which has now mostly recovered now that I use the "less ergonomic" G5.

You've obviously never used a good gaming mouse. It's not that the tracking is better (even though it can be), it's the options and additional buttons and such. Heck, just the ability to switch tracking resolutions on the fly is worth it to me. I used to think this way, and my first fancy gaming mouse changed my mind. :P

and wired > wireless always.

Except when it's not. In most situations I'll choose a wired mouse every time due to reliability, tracking lag (or lack thereof), the fact that no batteries are required, etc. However, there are situations in which getting rid of the wires is worth it.

I have one of those on one of my machines. It is an excellent mouse, and long-lived.

I have a Razer Lachesis and I really like it. I've had it for about 2 years now almost and it's worked great. The extra buttons are nice to have when I need them, though I don't really use it for the DPI as it moves way too fast and I could probably throw my entire pointer across the screen by just blowing on the mouse at max dpi. I used to have a wireless mouse before that and I had a lag problem with it, so I went back to wired. Wired doesn't bother me as I don't use my PC away from my desk anyways and the wire doesn't get ensnared or anything the way I have it setup.

Any mouse by them or Logitech is good though, gaming or otherwise. Because prior to this mouse I had a Logitech gaming mouse..though that died after 2 years..clicker went bad. This one I have now though still feels like it's going strong.

Oh and the options you get with the mouse like different profiles, double click speed, etc are pretty cool.

But yeah the most important thing on a mouse as far as I'm concerned are the back and forward buttons. Very very essential and I hate using mice without them.
