Xbox 360; Worth it?

Post » Thu Aug 11, 2011 9:59 pm

I'm a Playstation user; Always have been, always will be. Thats not to say I have never touched an Xbox or hate it with a deep, burning passion, but Playstation has generally been my console of choice.

Recently, I've been debating with myself whether or not to pick up an Xbox 360 for myself. When I found out Gamestop was offering them for $99, I thought to myself "Why the hell not?". I'm sure quite a few of you have Xbox 360's, so your the people I'm counting on to help me out with this situation; Is the Xbox 360 worth it?

Let me make this clear; I do not intend to start a flame war. I'm looking for opinions, experiences, and others to tell me if it would be worth it to pick one up.

My main concerns/questions;

- How is the system overall? How have your experiences generally been with your Xbox?

- If I already have a Playstation 3, would buying and Xbox 360 even be worth it?

- How do you find the Exclusives? Mass Effect 1, Halo, and Gears are some of the major titles I would like opinions on, but a few other recommendations would be welcome.

- Tell me about the red ring of death and other malfunctions you've had with your Xbox 360 console. How often do you replace your Xbox? How is Microsoft Support when it comes to these issues?

- For people who have both consoles, would you say the Xbox matches up with the Playstation 3? Do they truly run equally?

Thank you in advance for any opinions stated or questions answered, and please do not derail this topic into a Xbox 360 V.S. PS3 debate. :)

I've had my xbox for like 3 years now, never broken, and I love it. Some of the exclusives are great, I don't really care for Halo or Gears but a lot of DLC comes out like a year sooner on 360 and stuff.. However, unless you're really into multiplayer, or you really want some of the exclusives, I wouldn't say it's worth it since you already have a PS3.

I would never buy a $99 refurb from GameStop. Ever. In fact, I wouldn't buy an older model of the 360 period. Xbox 360 S or bust. The extra $100 it costs to grab a brand new 360 S 4GB would be (IMO) well worth it in the long run. I ended up sending my original Xbox 360 to Microsoft for repairs three times, and when the fourth system died my warranty was up and I decided against buying a new one. About a year later they announced the Xbox 360 S and I thought I'd give it a shot. It's more power efficient, runs cooler and quieter and really just strikes me as a quality machine.

Considering you already have the PS3 the only reason you'd wanna get the 360 (not mentioning future Xbox's of course) is for the exclusives which aren't that many and imo most are worst than Sony's exclusives  Or if you have loads of friends online and wanna play with them. I myself would still save the money having a fully functional console though.

I have had mine for 2 years. I like it a lot and it does serve me well, Halo is probably one of my favorite shooters of all time but I never was a fan of Gears. The exclusive DLC is great to have and I have had no problems when it comes to the system itself.Though when it does come to multiplayer PS3 and 360 are pretty much the same.

I'd say it's not worth it if you already have a PS3, speaking as a 360 owner.

Let me make this clear; I do not intend to start a flame war. I'm looking for opinions, experiences, and others to tell me if it would be worth it to pick one up.

My main concerns/questions;

- How is the system overall? How have your experiences generally been with your Xbox?

I got my first xbox in 2008. It has only red-ringed once and I had no problems after that. I then got the new xbox because it was a part of a deal Microsoft was running.

- If I already have a Playstation 3, would buying and Xbox 360 even be worth it?

When I bought a 360 I also had a PS3 at the time. The reason I bought one was because most of my friends had one and we could actually play games together.

- How do you find the Exclusives? Mass Effect 1, Halo, and Gears are some of the major titles I would like opinions on, but a few other recommendations would be welcome.

Some exclusive recommendations besides the ones you mentioned: The Fable series (skip 3), CoD2, the Crackdown series, the Forza Motorsport series, the L4D series, and the Scene-It games.

- Tell me about the red ring of death and other malfunctions you've had with your Xbox 360 console. How often do you replace your Xbox? How is Microsoft Support when it comes to these issues?

Like I said above, my 360 only red-ringed once. The customer support was great and because I was still under warranty, I just shipped my 360 to them and they sent me another 360 back.

- For people who have both consoles, would you say the Xbox matches up with the Playstation 3? Do they truly run equally?

I don't understand your question. Do they run equally? I guess so.

I have both, but use the 360 as my main console (though the PS3 is the one in my room). But that's only because I bought it first. If you have a couple hundred dollars to spare, then sure, go for it. I use my PS3 in the same way; only own the exclusives.

The 360 exclusives are pretty good for the most part, but I recommend you try them out at a friends place or something to see if it's your thing first. No point buying a 360 for Halo, only to find out you don't like it.

As for hardware issues, in my 4 years of experience, I have had the RRoD once, but Microsoft Customer Support are incredibly swift when dealing with it. It has a three year extra warranty for the problem in particular, so you're covered. They replace the console for you, and if you take proper care of it, it shouldn't happen to begin with. I used to abuse my old console, resting my feet on it, using it as a cupholder, etc. I don't do that anymore, and it works just fine now.

As for running equally, the PS3 is obviously better specification-wise, but most companies like to make games for a wider audience, and thus tone things down so both consoles can enjoy the game. Having said that, I've played a majority of the great exclusives PS3 has to offer, and they aren't exactly all that much better than a 360 exclusive.

It all depends on you, but I don't really think it's all that worth it.

In 4 years never had a single problem, Never needed to get it fixed, has always ran very well
- If I already have a Playstation 3, would buying and Xbox 360 even be worth it?
No not really
- How do you find the Exclusives? Mass Effect 1, Halo, and Gears are some of the major titles I would like opinions on, but a few other recommendations would be welcome.
The halo games are great as is ME 1, it's also really good to be able to play the whole series rather than joining half way through. As for gears never played it
- Tell me about the red ring of death and other malfunctions you've had with your Xbox 360 console. How often do you replace your Xbox? How is Microsoft Support when it comes to these issues?
Like I said above never had any problems, so couldn't tell you. I play quite regually, so it's not as if it's been sitting there gathering dust. It's received alot of use and is still running very well
- For people who have both consoles, would you say the Xbox matches up with the Playstation 3? Do they truly run equally?

Don't have a PS3 so couldn't say

I am a 360 user, and only got the PS3 as my Blu Ray player. Now having both and since you love your PS3, there is nothing the 360 can offer you that the PS3 can't do, except for the exclusive titles. So unless you need Halo or Gears badly I wouldn't bother with it. I like the 360 better because I prefer the 360 controller over the PS3 controller. I also like the ability of the 360 going full screen when I watch movies, I can't do that with the PS3, then again, I only use the PS3 for Blu Rays and the 360 as my DVD player.

Other than that, I can't see why you want a 360 unless you need Halo or Gears.

I wouldn't get a $99 one, that means it's one of the old problematic models.

- How is the system overall? How have your experiences generally been with your Xbox? I've had mine for 3 years and haven't had a problem. My PS3 got the YLOD after a year and a half.

- If I already have a Playstation 3, would buying and Xbox 360 even be worth it? Yes. Especially for $99.

- How do you find the Exclusives? Mass Effect 1, Halo, and Gears are some of the major titles I would like opinions on, but a few other recommendations would be welcome. I have all of those games. I love them all. Halo is always good, Gears 1 svcks, but Gears 2 is fantastic.

- Tell me about the red ring of death and other malfunctions you've had with your Xbox 360 console. How often do you replace your Xbox? How is Microsoft Support when it comes to these issues? I haven't had any problems other than the E74 or whatever it is that happens when the AV cord isn't fully connected.

- For people who have both consoles, would you say the Xbox matches up with the Playstation 3? Do they truly run equally?
I sold my PS3 because I wasn't using it. I was also a Sony loyal, but I just had an overall better experience with the 360.

Unless you really, really, REALLY want the exclusives, don't get the Xbox. I have an Xbox, and have played the PS3 at some of my friends' houses. The console wars are all crap, the two systems may not be identical hardware wise, but when you look at what the user gets out of it, they are exactly the same.

If you're getting a 360, see if you can't get the Slim. My Xbox 360 stopped playing discs about two months after I bought it. Got it repaired via the warranty. A couple years later (which is a decent amount of time) I got an RROD. Got it fixed. RROD'd again about a week later. Got it fixed. RROD'd the second I turned it on. Working on buying a Slim.

It certainly isn't worth it if you have a decent PC, as most exclusives of the 360 come to the PC as well. If you don't, I still don't know if I would call it worth it for the exclusives...
