Do You Count Sheep?

Post » Fri Aug 12, 2011 2:47 am

i count sheep in a manner of speaking. for the past few months i've had this thing where every morning when i wake up, the first thing i do is one round of clear-the-line in Tetris (original Gameboy version, clearly) on level 3. when i go to sleep, it's one round on level 6.

it works wonders for getting through the day.

Something like counting doesn't work for me. I'm concentrating too much on keeping my place to relax. When I can't sleep I usually think of somewhere pleasant I've been on vacation and just think about walking around looking at the sights. It relaxes me enough I'll usually drop off.

I stay awake doing stuff until I am dead tired so when I fall into bed, I fall asleep instantly. If I fail to do so, I start making all sorts of crazy thoughts like thinking how I could commit the Perfect Murder or what I would do if I was President of Earth.

I meditate, recap my to-do list for the next day, or recite the 35th sermon of vivec.

Tried it a couple of times, but it doesn't do anything for me. I get bored, but not sleepy.

Nah. I just mentally talk to myself, wondering about random stuff, things that happened during the day or that I'm gonna do the day after. And eventually I start mentally singing :P

I tried it once, it only managed to make me more awake with my mind thinking about sheep.

Counting --whatever-- is too mathematical for me. Since I was a child, I told myself stories. Yep. Any fantasy I can, no restriction :hubbahubba: . I'm in my thirties now and still tell stories to myself. When I'm not inspired, I get ideas from movies, series, books or games and make it my own. If I really have a lot on my mind, there's nothing I can do but to get out of bed, read or watch a movie til I'm tired again...
The downside is that sometimes I get too caught up in my story that I refuse to fall asleep when I feel I'm drifting away.

I have a related question, to those who do count sheep. Do you count sheep walking, single file, through a gate. Or perhaps jumping, again single file, over a broken wall. Or do you imagine a big field of sheep and try and count them all??

Nobody really counts sheep, or I don't believe they do....but the idea of them jumping over a fence seems to be central to the allusion. So like I said, jokingly, I wake up when a billy goat jumps over.

From wikipedia:

"In most depictions of the activity, the practitioner envisions an endless series of identical white sheep jumping over a fence, while counting them as they do so. The idea, presumably, is to induce boredom while occupying the mind with something simple, repetitive, and rhythmic, all of which are known to help humans sleep.

Although the practice is largely a stereotype, and rarely used as a solution for insomnia, it has been so commonly referenced by cartoons, comic strips, and other mass media, that it has become deeply engrained into popular culture's notion of sleep. The term "counting sheep" has entered the English language as an idiomatic term for insomnia. Sheep themselves have become associated with sleep, or lack thereof."

No. I tried once, and got bored after "one" and started to wonder why I didn't know what a Jackal is.
