Do you think the whole world has been structually destroyed? Because when I think about it only the area around the impact would get structual damage. Dust clouds would destroy most of the viable habitat, but buildings on other land masses would remain.

So do you think the whole world has been structually destroyed? and what do you think he rest of RAGE's world is like?

The world would most certainly be structually destroyed. Apophis (a real asteroid that will come dangerously close to the earth in real life) is the size of Manhattan. It's impact would have 1,000,000 megatons of energy. A regular TNT bomb would be about 1 megaton and a nuclear blast is about 50 megatons. And of course nuclear blasts can destroy entire citites. What do you think 1 million megatons would do. You're talking global destruction. What the asteroid doesn't destroy, the nuclear winter and radiation will do the rest.

Just an educational side note: NASA predicts that this real asteroid Apophis will have a 1 out of 250,000 chance of impacting Earth. It will pass by in 2029. But there's a chance that it could hit a small pocket of Earth's gravity when it passes by, and come back in 7 years and impact the Earth in 2036 in the oceans just west of California. It's scary to think about. ID Software are geniuses to make a gameplay story out of a real life scary situation like this. It gives the game that much more of a sense of realism.

After an asteroid impact of this magnitude, you can pretty much assume that all that's left of the world is scrap metal from buildings basically. Everything would in some way be damaged. Dead City is probably a pretty good picture of what devastation might take place. I can imagine that in real life, in the early years after this type of devastation, you may have to rebuild with scraps left behind by the devastated world. This is what the settlers and bandits have done. They've found whatever they can to rebuild shelters. Doing whatever they can to survive. In Fallout 3, the town Megaton was rebuilt from the remains of an old airplane. They basically stripped the plane of its scrap metal and built the outer walls of the town. But if the asteroid impact is 1,000,000 megatons of energy, I wonder if anything would remain standing. In Fallout a nuclear bomb caused cities to be leveled, and the damage looks kind of the same.
