Wifi Stopped Working

Post » Mon Aug 15, 2011 2:01 pm

I have no idea where to begin to even fix this problem. I tried resetting my wireless network and I'm given this error: "The Setup Utility was unable to locate a Wireless-G Access Point on your network. Please make sure your Wireless-G Access Point is powered on and cables are properly connected." My wifi just abruptly stopped working one day so I have no clue what caused this problem. I don't recall such difficulties when I set it up the first time. I've also tried Googling some answers but am only a mere layman when it comes to things like this.

Since you forumites are the smartest people I know, perhaps someone might be able to help me. Thanks.

I had this on my parents PC a few weeks ago... heres some possible solutions;

.reinstall wireless software (or switch to inbuilt wireless if it has it)

.unplug all modem cables, that includes the wireless dongle.

After all the time I spent on my parents PC, I simply needed to unplug and reinsert the dongle.

Only thing I can ask is did you install the software for the router or did you use the plug and play method? With most routers I use the plug/play method then use the IP address to access the router to put in my configurations. The standard access code to type into your browser is http://192.168.1.1 which will open up a prompt to enter your password and login information. It's always admin for login and admin for password with you having the ability to change the information in the proper setup area.

As for the router having difficulties i'm curious to how long you've had the router. I know that after 3 to 4 years i've had to get a new router due to components in the router breaking down and going bad. If worse comes to worse you could try to hit the reset button on the router for 30 seconds to reset every configuration and put it back to factory standard mode. After that plug it back in and have your computer try to detect the router then establish connection to it. You will have to becareful doing this to make sure you setup the encryption type.

I forgot to enable encryption on my router since i've never used wireless before and found out someone was using my wireless connection without my permission. Anyways just my thoughts on it hope the information help outs.

*Edit*

For others out therehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124012 router up on newegg that is sold out.

1. Unplug it and leave it unplugged for a few hours. It's worked for me in the past when a simple powercycle wasn't enough (my guess is something to do with heat-- yes routers can generate some serious heat after running for months on end)

2. Your WAP may have bit the big one. Just like any device, networking devices can die.

The router came with a disc that helped set it up. I do remember having to enter a certain IP in my address bar in order to access the configuration settings in the past though. So then I'm assuming I've used the "plug and play" method you were referring to. I've had this router for roughly a few years so it does seem plausible that it simply just broke down.
