Mojang's new indie title; Cobalt

Post » Fri Aug 19, 2011 7:04 am

Before you people burn me on a stake (or whatever the internet equivalent of that is) for saying that this is Mojang's game... I know that Mojang is only the publisher and Oxeye is actually the developer. But I can still call it Mojang's game because [censored] you

http://mojang.com/2011/08/18/introducing-cobalt/

Cobalt is an action game of running, jumping, rolling, shooting, throwing, dancing, hacking, rolling, flying, sliding, climbing, looting, deflecting, racing, pi?ata-ing, passing, scoring… and even more rolling! Play cooperatively with friends or defeat your enemies in a death match, loot match, race match, or Capture the Plug matches. (Or one of the other game modes, of course!)

The game is initially developed for PC platforms Windows, Mac and Linux. The Windows version will be released first.

The game’s map editor will be included with the release, and will be easy to share and find other player’s maps. Additionally the game is written mainly in Lua (a script language), which allows for easy modding.

We’re aiming to release Cobalt ‘this fall’.

Map editor? Lua scripting? :woot:

Looks like and interesting game, I'm quite surprised Mojang has started Publishing after there first game is only one year old (albeit very popular)

Lua.... Christ that brings back some major nostalgia of Garry's Mod. I spent waaaayyyy too much time on that game. Lua is quick and easy to grasp too, I love it more than pie.

Sounds pretty interesting, but:

The game started out a heavily story driven campaign game, lacking multiplayer what so ever. During this last half year or so, we have changed direction and are now focusing on multiplayer, including cooperative play. So I guess you could claim there is no dedicated single-player campaign planned now. But we are including the map editor in the game and the game supports campaignish content. So this we hope is something we could develop together with our hopefully future community.

RPS: What happened to all those single-player ideas?

Daniel Brynolf: They live on in the cooperative side of things

Not that much into multiplayer.

Kind of looks like it, or all of the products with the same name will come together and sue Mojang out of existence.
