Browser problem

Post » Fri Aug 19, 2011 5:42 am

I'm having a problem with two browsers, Chrome and IE. I normally use Chrome but noticed it's the same with IE, but not Firefox. Basically, whenever I try to use the browser, the dev tools page pops up and starts flickering quickly (on Chrome that part at the bottom of the window, in IE a seperate window). This makes it impossible to use the browser. I first noticed it with Chrome and thought I messed some settings up and tried deinstalling it, and when I started IE to download it again I noticed it had the same issue. Needless to say, reinstalling Chrome didn't help :P

This started suddenly today as I was trying to clean up my computer - deinstalled a couple of programs I didn't use any more, e.g. couple of games, and also McAfee since I wanted to change antivirus. Then I installed and deinstalled Avast and AVG (Avast because I didn't like it, AVG because that's when I noticed the Chrome issue and thought it was something to do with that). Besides that, I was also using TweakNow Powerpack 2010 to clean my registry and clear out temp files etc.

I went back and restored the deleted registry things using TweakNow, then went and did a system restore back to before I started cleaning up anything at all today - the issue still remains. (I then went and "undid" the system restore so I wouldn't have to deinstall the programs again).

Anyone have any clue what the problem could be or am I doomed to use Firefox now till it breaks aswell? :P or any suggestions on how I could try and find the issue? Recovery or safe mode maybe? Everything else seems to be working fine, it's just the browsers. I've tried updating Java and Flash aswell. The only other issues I had today were game freezes due to my display driver and also what I assumed was my CPU (was at 100%, which made me start to clean up the computer in the first place).

Have you tried pressing CTRL+SHIFT+I while using Chrome?

I just tried it now, it didn't help but interestingly enough if I keep ctrl and shift (or either of the two) held down, the flickering stops.. :P

Maybe you deleted a file that was something major in Google Chrome and IE. I am usually careful about deleting programs, like video games etc.

Right now there's this thing called Xvid Final Uninstall on my computer (I have no idea what it is) but I'm afraid to delete it because I'm not sure if it's linked to something on Google Chrome (I use it too.) So it's there, not bothering anybody. But I for one am not for clutter, especially not on my computer.

I thought I might have done that too, but the system restore didn't seem to fix it, so I'm not sure.. I'm running a disk cleanup now, might try another system restore to a point from yesterday and see if that's any different.

Ok, after I cleaned the disk and restarted the system (and also unplugged a second keyboard I had left plugged in), the problem seems to have gone away.. maybe there was a faulty file or something that got fixed or deleted. Strange, but thanks for your input Exorince and Dalek :)

Alright. Well if it happens again just completely remove your Google Chrome.

Then Google 'Google Chrome' and sift through the versions. Your current version would probably be faulty if it persists, there are like 5 different versions of Google Chrome, I use BETA. Haven't had any problems with it.
