Recreational time against basic needs

Post » Mon Aug 22, 2011 2:01 am

So I had a pretty exhausting day yesterday, had to be driving around town all day going from place to place walking through huge crowds of people since there was a holiday called culture day in Iceland yesterday. So I was pretty beat when I finally got home around 02:00

However with no time for myself behind me that day I looked at my schedule for the next day (the day today) knowing I have to work at 12:00 yet I didn't feel like going to sleep, I could get 8 hours of sleep and then 2 hours to prepare before having to be at work yet I tend to be the type who needs some recreational time more than taking care of my basic needs for maximum efficiency for the next day.

I've had a little of both through the years and I've noticed during periods where I don't have any time to allow myself any fun and I just work and eat/sleep/take care of other needs I am usually even more beat and unproductive during work hours than if I ignore some of my basic needs like a good nights sleep to allow myself some time to enjoy life. Yet I also know some people like a friend of mine who just works like a robot and would sooner skip out on having fun than skipping out on a meal or some sleep.

But what do you prefer ? If faced with an ultimatum of bodily needs VS fun and relaxation (which now that I look at it could be looked at as taking care of mental needs), then which do you go for ?

Bottom line here is, if you get enough sleep, take a bit of excercise , and take the time to cook decent food, you will live longer, and get as much total hobby time in anyway.

Doesn't have to be, I couldn't get in any time yesterday without putting off a little sleep. It's not just about getting hobby time at some point in life, it's about being content with each and every day feeling rejuvenated at the end of it.

I used to work 12 hour shifts in a Printers, 60 hours a week and overtime at weekends. Got through it by getting home from the night shift, going straight to bed, getting up with hours to spare, taking the time cook and eat (slowly!) a good meal, then killing things on the computer for half an hour before going to work. Don't miss the sleep, you will suffer, short and long term.

My priorities are all messed up.I'm all fun and no work, unless that work is needed to support my fun.

Personally i can't have fun if my primary needs aren't sated. Especially in sleep deprivated state, i'm like a zombie.
