Rage is a FPS game that will have some RPG elements such as open world exploration, economy system where you can buy and sell, side missions that are not a part of the main story (similar to borderlands and fallout 3), and looting dead bodies. This is not an RPG game like Fallout or Skyrim. It's a FPS. Your character will not be upgradable. You can upgrade your weapons and vehicles. You basically will wander around trying to survive in a massive wasteland map. To travel the huge map, you will be able to drive in a buggy armed with turrets and missles. The driving will be mostly optional in this game. If you want to ditch your vehicle and go on foot, you can, but you will probably make your game a lot longer.
The story is as follows...............There is actually a real life asteroid in outer space the size of Manhattan called Apophis. In the year 2005, NASA feared that this asteroid would come dangerously close to the Earth, and classified it as a near Earth object. It was predicted that this asteroid would pass by Earth in the year 2029 and not impact us.....But there is still a 1/250,000 chance that this asteroid would pass through a small pocket of Earth's gravity and come back in 7 years and pretty much destroy much of the Earth. In the story of Rage, this asteroid does impact us. And it destroys about 80% of all life on Earth. The asteroid impact carried 1 million megatons of energy upon impact. A nuclear bomb has about 50 megatons of energy. Several years before impact, the government built arcs that would house thousands of special people who could try to rebuild society after the impact. They are put into a cryogenic sleep and burried underground. They were to emerge some years later, but something went wrong, as you are the last of the arc dwellers. Everyone died but you. You awaken from your cryo sleep 100 years after the impact and emerge in this massive wasteland. In your quest to try to survive in a land filled with bandits, mutants, and other enemies, you discover that a government agency called the authority is running the world and is looking for you. This is about as much as I know.
The game's story mode is about 20 hours long. If you include the side missions, the game is probably 30-40 hours long. The multiplayer is not the norm for FPS games. It will be vehicle combat rally. It's basically a deathmatch style game based on vehicle combat. Then there will be a co-op mode called Legends of the Wasteland where you continue hidden parts of the story mode. This is the only shooting element to multiplayer.
