Questions About my Account

Post » Fri Sep 02, 2011 11:28 am

Ok, I'm confused.

I am trying to get back into the forums since the breach. I did the whole "Password Reset" step, with both my username *and* e-mail address being verified. However, I never actually received a new password. This account is my temporary account, under a new e-mail as I understand it creates a conflict to try to recover an old account with a shared e-mail attached to a new account.

I e-mailed GStaff a few times, but to no avail. I know he is busy, which is understandable, but considering this situation is a bit different than others that have been posted, just thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts.

Also...

When you check your profile you see something along the lines of "Name History", if I get my old account back and then want to make a new one, will my old one appear in "Name History" and will I be able to take my "post count" and "join date" with me? (I'm quite past the Layman status, and not looking to revisit it). :nope:

I'm guessing you were using the wrong email to get your password back?

I've talked to a few people who never received an e-mail, or who received an initial e-mail and no follow ups. With Gstaff at PAX we haven't been able to run down the recent crop of problems but hopefully things will settle back to normal soon.

"Name History" is for those people who have gotten a name change on their account. This is generally to tweak things like capitalization or to snip up some numbers, and given these restrictions few people get them. (The rules thread includes more details about what we will and won't allow.)

On rare occasions, generally because of some sort of technical problem, we'll transfer a name from one account to another. However things like registration date and post count can't be transferred.

An admin can change a user's post count, though I think things like join dates are a little trickier.

Edit: actually I think the post count may also require some nasty mucking about, so forget I said anything...

Edit 2: no, forget that, I was right first time.

Technically I believe they can both be changed - otherwise Gstaff signed up well before these forums were opened, an impressive feat! :) But regardless of what is possible they're not options the admin extent.

Short of more user-friendly tools, the join date can be changed by fiddling about with the database, though I guess that sort of thing defines the dividing line between what's possible and what's on offer!

Edit: hopefully my obvious cluelessness overrides any risk of trying to sound like a know-it-all...

No, I used the correct one.

It's a 2 step process. You click the "Forgot Password" option and they send you a link via e-mail to verify it's really you.

I received the e-mail and then clicked the link that takes you back to the site where you then opt for yet another e-mail that is supposed to contain your new password. There are a few ways to do this. The first is to just click the link and you should have your new password sent. But that didn't work. Another option is to click another link and enter a User ID and Verification Key. But that didn't work either.

I see how it would be easy to get e-mail address confused, but that didn't happen here. And there is proof of that because I am getting the e-mails. Just not one that contains my password.

What do you mean transfer a name from one account to another? I guess what I would be looking for is to transfer an account from one name to another. The post count isn't a big deal, but it would be awesome if I could hang onto my registration date, as it has been some time now. :celebration:
