Gothic Series

Post » Sat Sep 03, 2011 8:50 am

I have the Gothic series in my Steam library (they came as a package with the dreadful Arcania Gothic 4).

So far I haven't played any except for Gothic 4, and I'm wondering which one I should try first?

Gothic 1, Gothic 2 Gold Edition, or Gothic 3?

Is it a continuing story of sorts, or can you pick up anywhere in the franchise? Also, are mods available for these games?

I recommend starting at the beginning, personally. the first one is a bit more awkward than the second in some ways, but there is a continuing story (with recurring characters and such) and it may be harder 'going back' from Gothic 2. The scope is also a bit smaller and it has a ton of peculiar idiosyncrasies that contrast with later games in fun ways.

Don't play the third without the community patch.

Start from G1, but my favourite is Gothic 2. :)

Gothic 2 with Night of The Raven is the apex of the series IMO. Gothic is a fine game but seems a bit unpolished and barren (and very buggy). Never played 3 or 4 (as my patience with Piranha Bytes has worn thin).

Start with Gothic then move onto 2 as this expands upon the story. You may find http://wiki.worldofgothic.com/Misc/Console+commands extremely helpful for debugging.

I also have heard there are problems trying to get 1-3 running on x64 architecture.

Gothic 1, as has been said because of the continuing story and recurring characters etc. I'd say you could play any of them in whatever order and understand what's going on but since it seems you'll be playing them all anyway, go for them in order.

OK, I downloaded and installed Gothic 1, thanks for your recommendations!

However, i'm having trouble figuring out how to enable 1920x1080 resolution display.

It seems the maximum resolution possible is 1600x900. Do I need to use some sort of mod or unofficial patch to enable 1080p?

EDIT: oh no, the very first time I tried to run it I got an Access Violation error, reading as follows:

Does anyone know if there is a patch out for Gothic 3 yet?
