In case you didn't read the article, a vintage P-51 piloted by an 74 yr. old man, going in excess of 350mph crashed into crowded VIP Box Seats. (basically bleachers) Witnesses say it looked like he may have lost control, and now some are saying that the rudder on the vertical stabilizer may have come off just moments before the wreck. My concerns are obviously with the family and friends of the nine people killed, the pilot, and the many more seriously injured. What do you think about the safety of such events? Would you or have you gone to an airshow or air race personally? How did you feel about the safety of the event? I personally love aviation, do a bit of RC flying myself, yet I have not been to a high risk airshow in well over twenty years. Mostly because accidents like this unfortunately aren't that rare, and it's nearly impossible to dodge an aircraft coming your way at extreme speeds.

Ouch. :(

We had one a while back where a modern Hawk T1A crashed at an air show, but it only killed the pilot. There must be some health and safety concerns about flying planes in impressive manoeuvres so close to lots of people.

I went to the California Air Show in Salinas a couple of times. I'll never think about airshows in the same way since this happened.

I am really hoping I didn't know anybody in that incident. My home is pretty close to reno, and I know a few people who like to go to the air races.. When I saw that on the news I freaked out a bit. It's too late to call anybody right now, but I am first thing tomorrow.

My condolences to all the families and friends of the victims. Not a fun thing to wake up to..

Saw this as well. Especially Reno being about an hour and a half away from me, that is close to home.Sad and horrifying. I heard about it when I was at a football game, and the next day I learned Reno's HS was in Sacramento playing one of the HS. Away from home when tragedy struck, I am sure one of the football players knew someone that was there :sadvaultboy:
