Unofficial Magic: The Gathering Thread

Post » Wed Sep 21, 2011 12:33 pm

I decided to make this thread because I want to hook up with other people who play Magic (in this case the online version) and also of course to talk about anything and everything magic. Whether it be about our opinions on certain cards, help building a deck, or answering questions for people who don't play and are curious :).

I'll make and update a list of people and their user names on MTGO (Magic: the gathering online).

The users BGSF name will be the first name on each line, followed by that users name on MTGO in parenthesis.

LIST OF PEOPLE ON MTGO AND THEIR USER NAMES:

Xycolian : (Xycolian)

There is also a clan feature on MTGO, so I may be starting a clan with the name of "BGSF" or something.
__________________________________________________________

Perhaps I will consent to make a list of people who play irl with their general locations, and if they wish to meet other forumites, they can see who else is in their general location.

I'll see if this takes off or not. If you are willing, then please include your general location in your post.

If a list for RL players has popularity it'll be something like this:

(Example)

General locations:

Los angeles: Xycolian, member10963, dude447

Chicago: member108e6, mudcrabslol5243

Further inquiries about meeting up can be made via PMs between people who share a general location.
_____________________________________

With that out of the way I'll break the ice with a few questions.
My own answers will be in parenthesis next to the questions.

1. Do you play Magic? If no, why not and what do you think about it? (Of course I do! I made the thread after all).
2. What's your favorite color in Magic? (Green)
3. Are you casual or do you play tournaments? or perhaps have a very competitive nature even if you don't play tournys? (Casual, with a little competitive-ness)
4. How old are you? (optional, I'm just curious :P I'm 20)
5. Do you play MTGO or do you play irl? or both? (I play MTGO exclusively now. I used to have a friend who played with me irl, but he lost interest :sadvaultboy:)

Oh dear I forgot about duel of the planeswalkers... I'll have to do some research on that.

I'd have a lot of tips for cards you should get, but they most likely come from an older set that may not be supported by duel of the planeswalkers. I'll get back to you on that.

A very good card (or 4) for your infect deck would be http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=193970 it's a cheap way to make your infect creatures largely unblockable.

No, no. Duels doesn't let you build decks. Those decks are built from my pile of cards. I don't really have an opportunity to get cards often, I have some M11, some M12 a little New Phyrexia and a lot of Mirrodin besieged.

EDIT:
Canopy Cover looks bad ass. What would I take out, though?

Well for 2 I'd probly take out leaching bite, I can see that being used mainly so that a weak attacker you have can overcome a stronger defender they have (which wouldn't necessarily be a problem if you used canopy cover instead). Although you'd be losing the opportunity to remove a creature with one toughness that may be a problem, I think it's a great exchange in the fact that you get a little more security knowing your opponents won't be able to cast spells on your bigger creatures like phyrexian swarmlord.

Another card you could replace for a canopy cover would be Vedalken Anatomist... he has an interesting ability, but you seem to have a lot of token producing cards, which you could throw away to defend yourself. also the chances of drawing him when you might need him seem really low whereas you have plenty of tokens. I'll look for something that'll be able to take care of flyers that you may have trouble dealing with without the alchemist.

If you find yourself in need of mana a lot, http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=220534 is also a nice card to stick in any proliferate deck for a constantly increasing source of mana.

Also, a nice heavy creature you could add to your deck (or replace your current heavy for) Is http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=230068

Oh and you have just GOT to look at this card http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=218044

The Anatomist has saved my life and slowly kills anything. Also, I have neither of those cards. The Swarmlord could definitely benefit from being hexproof and I usually have enough mana, but Everflowing Chalice+Trigon of Infestation seems like a recipe for success.

I played a little in one form or another and it all started with the original Duels of the Planeswalkers of 1999. For it's time it was incredible :) . After that a teensy bit OCTGN and Magic Workstation, and recently I gave the new DoP a go but I found it meh (come on, so few cards and you can't even mix them?) . But quite honestly, I have way too little experience to play competetively, and prefer Yu-Gi-Oh :turned: . For the types of cards I play? Blue + Black + White + Artifacts (Esper all the way ;) ).

@SPAH Steel Overseer is kick-ass in any deck that uses Artifact Creatures.

Yes I tend to play Magic irl (mainly going to drafts, but the new set is likely to change that)

Anyone see the whole http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=mtg/tcg/innistrad/cig# yet?

Me, I'm hoping to get my hands on that Laboratory Maniac (If you draw a card from an empty library (deck) you win instead)

Oh and here's a Standard Constructed deck that I'm building for the next set:

Mainboard

6x Swamp
7x Island
4x Ghost Quarter
4x Drowned Catacombs
3x Darkslick Shores

4x Visions of Beyond
2x Doom Blade
2x Go for the Throat
4x Jace's Erasure
4x Mana Leak
4x Think Twice
4x Cemetery Reaper
4x Laboratory Maniac
2x Phyrexian Crusader
2x Call to the Grave
2x Jace, Memory Adept
2x Mind Unbound

Sideboard

2x Doom Blade
2x Go for the Throat
2x Phyrexian Crusader
3x Disperse
3x Flashfreeze
3x Ratchet Bomb

The deck's goals: Mill anyone!!!!! Including itself. With Cemetery Reaper, Call to the Grave, and Phyrexian Crusader on defense, I highly doubt that anything's getting through. All that's left is to Mill someone out with the combo of Mind Unbound and Jace's Erasure
Although other than the maniacs, I need 3 Ghost Quarters, 4 Visions of Beyond, and 1 Cemetery Reaper.

Edit: If you do consent to the irl locations, I live near Spring Lake, NC and head to Gamer's Guild (http://www.ncgamersguild.com/index.html), and don't mind having other forum goer's come and visit and play a few games (considering none of the other people in my household don't care for Magic)
