Having to be tough to survive

Post » Fri Sep 23, 2011 3:58 pm

"I don't know where you're from but in America you have to be tough to survive. The guy should of caught the ball and he dropped it so the crowd had to tell what's up."

I was replying to an article on yahoo about a guy getting booed but in a good nature way, and this is what I got back.

So what do you guys think? Do you have to be tough in America to survive? Because if you think so, then I am living proof that this is wrong. I am in no ways the "tough guy". I am more cautious of everything around me, and use common sense when needed and I survive just fine.

Edit- I sent a request to get the name changed.. I don't know what I was doing when I was typing the title..

In the context of this fine gentleman's comment, I'd agree a little bit. You have to have thick enough skin so that you don't take being told "what's up" (i.e. [censored]s and loudmouths) too seriously, but in general I'd say that no, you don't have to be tough. I imagine that being smart would keep most folks out of situations that would require one to be tough to survive.

Sure, you need to be tough in ways that aren't exactly physical toughness. Being tough emotionally is a good trait to have, being tough in speech, tough in rules and their associated punishment. These are the ways you need to be tough in our culture. If you're a pushover, you won't get what you aim for or will get nothing at all. Being tough physically, or appearing to be so, will help boost how people perceive you in other ways, and may make you seem tougher in speech than you really are ( look at Mike Tyson ).

Ok that all makes sense. I was really saying on the lines of physical toughness.

The guy's quote was basically stating that catching a baseball in considered tough. I thought that was a little... weird... he wasn't stating that he had to be tough enough to not get booed. I agree that you have to be thick skinned to be anywhere really. If you take everything seriously anywhere, then you are likely to be called a "Sensitive Syd."

But I don't think that being thick skinned is really the physical meaning of tough. I would think that would be some kind of mental issue.

Yeah, mental toughness and physical toughness are two different things. Just beware the guy who has both.

Some people struggle, some people skate. Same as anywhere else, of course.

very much. Just because I'm not physically tough doesn't mean I can't survive.

Exactly.

Toughness is more than just physical strength. Tenacity, is a necessity.
