Something that worries me.

Wherever i've read information about social interaction, i've always read that people's empathy and willingness to do good works to one other goes down as their personal situation changes for the worse.

I read in the news that by 2050 the west will only account for 25% of the world's wealth if current trends continue, what will happen to our societies as a result of this?

If many of us end up poor and destitute, are we going to become morally destitute as a society too? what will our society look like compared to how it is now? or could we possibly find ourselves renewed for the better once material wealth is stripped from us?

What do you think will happen to our society? what will we gain? what will we lose?

The west accounting for 25% of the worlds wealth doesn't mean we will be poor.

We're already morally destitute, my friend. It's just that we have the convenience of modern amnetities that are masking it.

I would challenge you to produce evidence that we are any worse off than 100, 200, 300+ ago.

And we don't realize it, and that's the most frightening thing of all.

Why should I? I never said we're "worse off". We're just as bad, really. It just doesn't seem as bad with so many moralizing twits distracting us. There have been new laws passed, and new customs adopted that aren't as bad as the prejudices we held in the past but we've relocated that bad behaviour into other arenas.

To be entirely honesty, I wouldn't be surprised if, in 10 or 20 years, we see the rise of Death Games on TV.

But how much worse can it get? instead of denying people healthcare as some places in the west do now, will they even be denied an ambulance during an emergency or even entry to a hospital outright?

Instead of seeing homeless people on the street begging as we do now, are we going to start seeing people starving on the streets?

Will crime rocket? will the police and the rich retreat to gated communities? (i know they exist already, but will there be more of them?)

My fear is i don't know how much worse it can get, a little or a lot? and also, could the lack of money have some unexpected beneficial effects for us as a society or is it all doom and gloom?

In a sentence I would say we're different from 300 years ago because of relativism which is the denial of absolute truth as possible. In a sense, we've undermined our own ability to define any morals as better than any other morals- evacuating any meaning from the term.

Ah Theme Hospital, i loved that game so much along with Theme Park, two good reasons along with Populous as to why i'l always love Peter Molyneux, no matter how many times he dashes my hopes with over-optimistic expectations of his new games. :)
