Question about video compression (AIC)

Post » Sat Oct 01, 2011 2:41 pm

Well, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for making another thread about movie files.

I record a lot of WoW videos, and to my surprise quite a few years ago, I realized that I could record World of Warcraft directly while playing the game, without having to dowloand anything at all. It's apparently a feature in World of Warcraft that is actually a part of the game if you're on a Mac with the appropriate software. I never questioned this in the first place and I didn't care, I thought it was cool.

But, now that I'm recording games OTHER than WoW, I find myself at somewhat of a loss on how to do it, because my Mac kind of does EVERYTHING for you. It's designed to utilize the AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) form of compression to convert the raw video into quicktime files to easily upload them to iMovie. Seemless, flawless, beautiful. It doesn't ever hicup, and it works brilliantly. I can record in 1600x1200 in WoW in HD. I just hit my keybind (F6) for recording, it starts recording. When I'm done, I hit F6 again. It stops recording. Here is where the handholding comes in, and that's why I'm confused.

It automatically starts to compress the file while you're playing and saves it on your HD. Pretty simple, but that doesn't help me when I'm trying to find out HOW it does this. Or what a codec is. Or what compression means. -_-

So, some of you may know, I'm trying to start a Let's Play but on my WinBlowsdows partition. I record the data using FRAPS, and then..what next? The file is absurdly large. I guess that's where..the compression comes in. Right. I got that.

..how do I compress it? WoW does it for me. Using the AIC Apple Intermediate Codec. I keep saying that, because it's apparently important. Because iMovie (which is what I want to use to edit the video) uses AIC flawlessly.

My question (I promise you this is my last thread):

-I have video recorded with Fraps on my Windows partition, in WMP or something format. It's freaking huge.
-I need to convert it or compress it or something using the Apple Intermediate Codec so I can upload it without having weird issues into iMovie
-How do I go about doing this? My computer just automatically compresses my files when I record in WoW, which is where I've done all my machinima to date. So I'm spoiled. What IS a codec? How do I use it and utilize it to make video files something else and compress them and all that jaz? :ahhh: Is a codec some sort of a program? Is it a button I can click on? A "thing" I can use to put my WMV files into it and voila, they aren't anymore?

Some might question the reason why I don't just import the files from FRAPS directly into iMovie.
Well, the reason to that question is, when I put them on my external HD and move them onto my Mac side of my HD, the files become..I don't know, stupid. They jump and freeze and the video pauses and flutters while the audio stays smooth. It's quite odd. I don't know the reason for this. But, the OTHER problem is, when I DO directly import those files into iMovie, it takes near TWENTY MINUTES to "optimize" the video file before it'll even start generating thumbnails. Which takes another 3 minutes. And that was for a test file of a grand total length of TWO MINUTES. A real LP file will be at least 10. That's over an hour to "optimize".
My WoW files take less than 20 seconds to import. 20 seconds>20 minutes.

Oh praise be the Lawd where is DEFRON when you need him. :shakehead:

Use http://handbrake.fr/ to encode it using h264.

Encode what? The Fraps WMV file? Ok. So I record it using fraps, put the file on my HD, port it over to my Mac side, open up handbrake, and then encode that file using h264? What is h264?

You don't have to encode the video file in your Mac, you can do it in Windows right after you record. H.264 is the best video codec for HD videos. (or at least the most common)
