Review and Discussion of Console Port Issues on PC

Post » Tue Oct 04, 2011 2:14 pm

I have just downloaded and played through the first mission of the game. Now that being said, this thread has zero to do with the actual content of the game, as obviously not many, including myself, have experienced it yet. This will focus on the console port issues on the PC version. Which, spoiler alert, I am quite disappointed in how many issues I have experience in my little playtime. Especially from such big, industry standard computer game developers like Bethesda and id software...

No graphics customization -

You do not have the ability to customize graphics in game, aside from the extremely basic resolution, widowed mode, and brightness. Now that is literally the most bare-bone customization options I have seen in any game in a long time. In fact, it is almost the absolute minimum that could be offered while still having a functional product. VERY disappointed in this. I know there is some "auto adjusting" video settings program that sets the game to an acceptable setting graphic-wise on the backend, but that is just not acceptable to PC community who prides themselves on customization.

Mouse sensitivity/control is horrid -

Now I know I MAY BE a little harsh in this category, being a long time competitive FPS player. That being said, the mouse sensitivity options are terrible. I literally have it on the lowest setting possible and can do a 360 degree turn 2-3 times by moving my mouse from one side of my mousepad to the other. I say this because its an acceptable standard by which many FPS players gauge sensitivity settings, so I understand if that means nothing to some of you. But for me, and im sure others, for the absolute lowest setting, this is quite absurdly fast.

In addition to this, in true console port fashion, every single aspect of the game has a separate (un-customizable of course!) mouse sensitivity setting. This includes free look, iron-sight aiming, menu, and inventory screens ALL on a separate sensitivity with no way to change this. I get for thumb-sticks that changing this in each aspect makes it easier to control......but for the PC version? This is a nightmare, no respectable FPS player in their right mind would appreciate having a different free look and sighted sensitivity with no customization options. Absolutely dropped the ball here. But the best part is this isnt even the worst of it...

Inventory / mission pages / and in fact basically all in-game menus are HORRIBLY buggy using the mouse (might be just a low sensitivity issue, as i do not use high sensitivity). Every interactable object, be it an item, text, or button seems to have some kind of backround "boxing" behind it, as the mouse curser lags and gets stuck trying to mouse over each of these. Becoming almost block-like in its movement.

These are currently the biggest issues I've noticed so far. Feel free to discuss these, and add any additional issues you feel are problems and/or lazy and I will add them to the list here should you make a good case for them. I feel like I am forgetting another one, but I will be sure to add issues as they arise during my play. While I'm not speaking for the quality of the overall game or the gameplay itself, I can say that thus far I am pretty disappointed by the lazy console porting that im seeing here from 2 companies I would have expected more from...

Glad people are voting, but please post. I want to get some discussions going here.

I am not going to vote because I don't feel this is a port. idTech 5 works differently then we have seen other engines work. I personally have had no glitches or issues, mouse works wonderfully (although too sensitive in the Accept/Decline screen), graphics are amazing, so are the sound and animations. And this is running on a laptop at 1080p :) Also once we get the x64 exe and idStudio later this week we can see what RAGE is truly capable of
