Well isn't this just lovely?

I suppose I've come to expect this sort of disappointment. I have been a diehard PC gamer for so many years, decades even, I agonized over whether to get this game for console or PC, my PC is pretty solid and I finally ended up deciding to stay true to my roots, and get the PC version. Now it looks like my reward is having to spend another $65 on the game after tax, and haul my butt out to GameStop tonight, and not actually get to start playing for a while yet.

I just loaded up Rage for the first time, and while it was still in the opening cinematic I got a blue screen of death. Page Fault in Non Paged Area, something something .dll. Keep in mind, I almost NEVER get blue screens. I gave it the benefit of the doubt though, sort of, because I had accidentally hit the "switch between monitors" button on my laptop when I meant to hit the "turn off laptop's monitor" right next to it, was trying to cut off all other light sources besides my primary 27" monitor to avoid distraction, y'know really get into the zone. But, since I hit the wrong button and made it wig out a bit I was prepared to overlook and forgive the blue screen, assuming it was mostly my fault.

Another issue I ran into right away though was that the key customization menu won't allow me to set up "walk backwards" as number pad 5, which I've done for... well since 1997. It simply won't allow that choice, and it screws up my entire keyboard config. I know I'm unusual for using trackball and not mouse, I know I'm unusual for using numpad and not WASD but hey that's me and it's worked for me for many many years. I shouldn't have to change.

But I might've just used the XBox controller for PC, and might not have gotten another blue screen, and might've lived with it... if not for the final nail in the coffin.

As soon as I got into actual gameplay, the texture pop (going from super soft, super low detail initial texture to the actual real texture) was ABSURD. As I looked around in the first starting area, it would not only pop big time and super obviously, it would GO BACK to the initial low detail mess as soon as I looked away from that direction. So as I turned in this small room, it was flickering from ultra low res to regular texture, and going back and forth, I can't even fully describe this, this is not regular texture pop or anything like that, this isn't the sort of thing I've ever seen in a game before. (I'm obviously used to and able to live with detail pop at a distance in something like Oblivion, etc, I know what that is, this is waaaay beyond it)

Outside was the same sort of deal, so completely distracting and ridiculous as to make the experience LITERALLY unplayable to even the most tolerant of persons.

Could it be fixed soon via patch? sure, it could. Could I fix it myself with some sort of tweaking? maybe. Will I get any other blue screens? maybe maybe not...

But this is why I recently improved my console set up (new tv, got a ps3 and wii to go with my 360) because I am just SICK of dealing with this crap.

I have been the most stalwart and die-hard PC gamer EVER but it is time for me to start SERIOUSLY re-evaluating that and being much, much more careful about buying anything for PC except some very carefully thought out specific purchases like Blizzard stuff.

I've been with id since Commander Keen, I've never really been disappointed in them. I'm not even saying I am now, because I'm about to get in my car and go wait in line for 2 hours to get the 360 version of this... I had tonight planned out and I WILL NOT BE DENIED. I am playing this game until work in the morning, come hell or high water. I wanted to play it on PC and not spend $120 on the game, but it looks like that ship has sailed.

Not pointing fingers at anything, other than maybe myself for not having stuck with my initial preorder on console copy. I was lured in by the 3 extra hours thanks to steam and west coast. I never learn.

Btw my PC is:

Asus G73 laptop
Radeon Mobility 5870
8 gigs RAM
Runs Crysis 2 very well at 1920x1200.

Interesting...

I'm on the same laptop as you. No blue screen for me, but I'm getting that texture pop in. My drivers are up to date, and I haven't had any trouble with more demanding games in the past. I'm going to post this on the Notebookreview forums.

I logged in to this site just to comment on this.

The tearing is UNBELIEVABLE. I am trying to look past it, but it is so annoying. I built my computer this summer, 4gb ram, 2 gig graphic card, i5 processor, it should run the game. Drivers are up to date even with the Rage performance driver and I am getting some serious tearing.

The worst is during the "cut scenes" where top and bottom of your vision go black, it constantly flashes textures in there that are super distracting.

A friend and I have been planning to get this game for so long : /

Signed up to post this as well. I have a VERY good system (570 SLI and a 2500K CPU, 8 gigs of ram) and the texture popup is unacceptable. Completely distracting.

Let's not even mention the terrible mouse look support (different Z and Y axis sensitivities, with no way to tweak them? Are you serious?) and a complete lack of video options.

Unless there are some dramatic fixes for the PC version, color me very disappointed. It feels like a terrible console port so far, and right from the get go.

Wow, sounds like this isn't a G73 exclusive problem. Maybe something to do with Steam's decryption? Their servers were overloaded. In any event, I'm not going to struggle with this tonight. Hopefully there will be something official tomorrow.

i7-2600k @ 4.2GHz
8G Ram
Dual 6970's Crossfired
Full SSD Hard Drives

For the 30 seconds I can run the game before it hard crashes, I am getting bad quality textures, screen tearing, and slow loading textures on fast movement. The video options menu has 3 knobs to turn Resolution, Gamma and AA - lol wtf? Where is the crossfire/sli support? How can a game be this terrible at launch - was it not tested and even delayed?

I'm sure patches and drivers will fix the game so it will at least be playable, but if the texture problem isn't fixed I am deleting this game and never buying ID/Bethseda again.

basically same issues here. not on a laptop. I honestly cant believe this. I feel like every company these days is totally cool with releasing unfinished crap, whether its software, a phone, a car, whatever really.

I'm stunned. This has never happened to me on an id software game ever! Even qTest was more playable than this...HOW could they have released it like this...hopefully a fix is shortcoming because this is a TRAGEDY!

i'm only getting 10-20 FPS on top of the problems noted above, which is ridiculous. My specs are well above recommended specs yet i have to deal with this [censored]. so much for a 60 fps game there id.

These are my specs

Win 7
i7 920 stock
560 GTX ti
6 Gigs Ram
SSD Drive

I get texture pop-in like crazy, game freezes and comes back again...was completely unplayable. This is most likely something related to an old build or something that crept in...Doesn't make any sense that id would let this release like this. But then again how could they have not QAed this...STRANGE.

In the old days, you would have a response by now from someone at id....and so far it's crickets.

Same issues.

My setup:
Phenom II 720
4 gb ddr 3 1600
hd 5850 1 gb
win 7 hp x64

Playing on a 1080p monitor
Steam community disabled in game. No steam cloud syncing.

This is truly rediculous. I can't believe that any producer would release a product with these issues.

If I turn in any direction all of the textures that are off screen are initially increadibly blurry, then pop up (this alone would make the game unplayable, because it happens constantly). In addition I can't be getting more than 20 fps, and there are noticeable 1-2 secound pauses.

Here's what I've done so far: I preloaded the game, then decrypted it earlier. Tried to play, but saw these issues. Defragmented the hdd RAGE is on and installed the AMD "Rage" driver. Then I verified integrity of game cache and tried the game again. Same issues.

Here's a youtube video of what the issue looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c5oEdfT4OWY
Only I get much worse fps, and lots of artifacts in the shooter parts of the game. I also get lots of hud flickering

Hey guys, OP again here...

just got back from GameStop. Picked up XBox 360 version mainly because I prefer it's controller to that of PS3. I was intending to use the 360 controller for my PC after an initial period with the keyboard/trackball to really soak in all the detail up close on my monitor.

PS3 would've been nice for it all being on one Blu-Ray though.

Anyway, it's installing now.

I'm sure I'll enjoy the game a lot now that I'm playing it on a system that leaves nothing to doubt about specs etc.

I have loved PC gaming for so long, and I was such a staunch anti-XBox person when the first XBox came out and started pilfering games which had been bound for PC either to XBox exclusivity or "console-itis" (Halo, Thief 3, Deus Ex 2, the list goes on...)

and now here I am caving, in a big way. But they've left me no choice. I just can't deal with these headaches anymore

Blizzard will keep me a PC gamer and I'll always grab good deals on Steam from time to time but man... it's just a real disappointment when id software of all people, who were like the flagship company of PC gaming at one point, and who always made sure to put out a polished product with plenty of customization options for your graphics, etc... have now joined the ranks of companies which allow their PC version to be an afterthought and the middle child.

I just never thought id would go down that road. I'm not asking that console versions not have been made for Rage, I understand that opens up a much wider audience, I am not making that argument (though I was once upon a time with XBox 1) - I am merely saying we expect the PC version to be polished, finished, and ready for prime time when it's released. That's not so much to ask. As PC Gamers we understand that patches can be necessary, in fact that is a strength not a weakness, and consoles obviously have embraced it now too. But issues of this magnitude should not be the type of thing that has to be patched, these are quality assurance pre-release testing things. That's where you catch stuff like this.

So, id software, from a very long time, very loyal fan... I just have to express some disappointment. And I'm not real pleased at having spent $130 or thereabouts after tax on your game today. I am not exactly rolling in cash and it stings badly.

I understand, but you shouldn't have gave them your money twice due to their lousy QA testing. Unless you didn't pay twice, then never mind.

LOL.. iD got bought out bro. The iD your thinking of died last year. Its most probably the people working at the iD division of Bethesda arn't making the decisions anymore and have an employment contract with ZeniMax. The iD team are hitting their mid 40's and have been on a wild ride for 20 years. They couldn't go on developing games forever so they sold it. This is why it has turned out the way it has.
John Carmack and is a computer enthusiast in a way you wouldn't understand and I know if it was the old iD calling shots, then RAGE wouldn't have turned out the wholesale disaster it has. Life goes on.........

If I had known that this game "auto-detects" graphics settings and includes no graphics options besides AA, I would have never purchased it. I'll do my homework next time.

My rig is very old and now no matter what I do my game will look like crap. I don't mind playing at 25-30 fps but I do mind if Half Life 1 / Quake II look better visually.

I've spent some time with the XBox 360 version now, not much obviously but yea...

Seems pretty cool. Unfortunately I will admit that the polish of things like weapons, and some animations and stuff do not seem as high as something like a Halo game or Gears of War. Still, it seems pretty good. I expect to enjoy it pretty well. It's definitely not the like, PERFECT gaming experience I was hoping for though. My happiness level with Quake 1, Doom 3, and even older id games was always pretty much max I had just about no complaints on Doom 3 for instance. Maybe I'm just too picky these days but the polish level on Gears of War 3 is really high compared to this. It's still good though. I'm glad I have a playable version of the game now and after I use the restroom real quick I'll continue playing for another 5 hours or so.

I did give my money twice, yes, I know I shouldn't, but I had tonight planned for quite a while, and I couldn't just write it off. I have limited free time as I'm in the navy.

Well, one thing I have noticed on the 360 version is sometimes when I stop my crosshairs they will drift to the right, I don't think I've ever had that issue in any other XBox game. Anyone else notice this? it doesn't happen every time I stop my crosshair but... maybe 40% of the time, so pretty often.

I can't even understand how they let this through QA?

How could they not see this happening, what the hell is going on. The biggest trolling in the history.
ID Software you messed up, no PC gamer will EVER trust you again.

And for Bethesda, this is turning out really bad lately for you guys.

Fallout NV, a buggy mess, Brink a complete flop, and RAGE = the worst game in history in PC gaming, and this from the Father of all FPS, Amazing...

I dread to think about Skyrim now.

Sadly tonight for me established that I will *definitely* be getting Skyrim for console. Just a question of 360 or PS3.

I go back to Daggerfall with the TES series. Skyrim looks great. It will probably underwhelm me a bit like Oblivion did but it should be fun. Fallout 3 for me was Bethesda's pinnacle achievement so far. Totally fantastic. Very very few problems with that game. New Vegas was a mess but still had some fun in it.

Btw I switched to a spare 360 controller and I'm not getting the crosshair/vision drift anymore so, disregard. Must've been an issue with that controller. Hopefully it's not f'd up permanently.

I continue to play... I'm enjoying for the most part. The funny thing is, I am so far more impressed with the polish of the iphone Rage HD game I have had for a long time now. That was really really polished. But actual Rage seems good too, just some sort of disappointing aspects to it.

Like I said before, the polish level is just not up to the standards I'm used to in Gears of War, Halo, Portal 1 and 2... StarCraft 2... those games just really make sure they are ready before release y'know?

But it's still good, and I'm still an id fan. The thing is, id was always very much in this mindset of "oh we aren't going to embrace all these things other companies are putting in their games, it's unnecessary and we want to stick to the basics" but now you can see they are embracing so much of that stuff. They clearly took a lot of hints from other games, and that's fine. Lord knows they've been emulated over the years enough that they've earned to do a little in the other direction.

The thing is though it feels a bit half-hearted, like they begrudgingly are accepting some of the conventions of gaming nowadays, but aren't really executing it quite as well as other companies who's hearts are more in it.

And there are just some things with like, for instance animations and control of the buggy, when you dismount from it, some of the way dialogue and quest giving works... there are some elements that just feel a bit off. You can sort of tell that adding these flourishes does not come naturally to id, and that they don't have as much experience doing it as other companies.

Still, a good game. Hopefully by the time I finish the campaign I will be saying "a great game, but flawed" - rather than just "good"
