I just loaded up Rage for the first time, and while it was still in the opening cinematic I got a blue screen of death. Page Fault in Non Paged Area, something something .dll. Keep in mind, I almost NEVER get blue screens. I gave it the benefit of the doubt though, sort of, because I had accidentally hit the "switch between monitors" button on my laptop when I meant to hit the "turn off laptop's monitor" right next to it, was trying to cut off all other light sources besides my primary 27" monitor to avoid distraction, y'know really get into the zone. But, since I hit the wrong button and made it wig out a bit I was prepared to overlook and forgive the blue screen, assuming it was mostly my fault.
Another issue I ran into right away though was that the key customization menu won't allow me to set up "walk backwards" as number pad 5, which I've done for... well since 1997. It simply won't allow that choice, and it screws up my entire keyboard config. I know I'm unusual for using trackball and not mouse, I know I'm unusual for using numpad and not WASD but hey that's me and it's worked for me for many many years. I shouldn't have to change.
But I might've just used the XBox controller for PC, and might not have gotten another blue screen, and might've lived with it... if not for the final nail in the coffin.
As soon as I got into actual gameplay, the texture pop (going from super soft, super low detail initial texture to the actual real texture) was ABSURD. As I looked around in the first starting area, it would not only pop big time and super obviously, it would GO BACK to the initial low detail mess as soon as I looked away from that direction. So as I turned in this small room, it was flickering from ultra low res to regular texture, and going back and forth, I can't even fully describe this, this is not regular texture pop or anything like that, this isn't the sort of thing I've ever seen in a game before. (I'm obviously used to and able to live with detail pop at a distance in something like Oblivion, etc, I know what that is, this is waaaay beyond it)
Outside was the same sort of deal, so completely distracting and ridiculous as to make the experience LITERALLY unplayable to even the most tolerant of persons.
Could it be fixed soon via patch? sure, it could. Could I fix it myself with some sort of tweaking? maybe. Will I get any other blue screens? maybe maybe not...
But this is why I recently improved my console set up (new tv, got a ps3 and wii to go with my 360) because I am just SICK of dealing with this crap.
I have been the most stalwart and die-hard PC gamer EVER but it is time for me to start SERIOUSLY re-evaluating that and being much, much more careful about buying anything for PC except some very carefully thought out specific purchases like Blizzard stuff.
I've been with id since Commander Keen, I've never really been disappointed in them. I'm not even saying I am now, because I'm about to get in my car and go wait in line for 2 hours to get the 360 version of this... I had tonight planned out and I WILL NOT BE DENIED. I am playing this game until work in the morning, come hell or high water. I wanted to play it on PC and not spend $120 on the game, but it looks like that ship has sailed.
Not pointing fingers at anything, other than maybe myself for not having stuck with my initial preorder on console copy. I was lured in by the 3 extra hours thanks to steam and west coast. I never learn.
Btw my PC is:
Asus G73 laptop
Radeon Mobility 5870
8 gigs RAM
Runs Crysis 2 very well at 1920x1200.
