Rage = Borderlands 2

Post » Fri Oct 07, 2011 11:15 am

I didn't come into Rage thinking this but as a huge Borderlands fan, I can't help feeling like so much about Rage is incredibly similar to Borderlands. Basically it's an open world shooter with RPG elements and there aren't that many of those so understandably it feels similar. Also it has a post-apocalyptic setting, but many games do these days. (Technically Borderlands isn't post-apocalyptic, but has similar lawlessness and story involving vaults, etc.) Beyond that though, this game isn't cel-shaded but still has the same style and look of Borderlands from the wasteland to the dungeon areas, the vehicles, right down to the character models, enemies and allies alike. The towns and how you get quests are set up similarly. I could get into more detail and go on and on. It's not necessarily a bad thing. I love Borderlands and I'm loving Rage. If I were Gearbox I might think about filing some kind of lawsuit though.

Except in RAGE you don't level up or get any kind of special abilities. They are similar, yes, but I think on the RPG side of thngs, Borderlands is way better.

If Rage was more like borderlands or fallout i wouldn't like it, fps and rpg to me do not mix. It's not that rage has rpg like elements, it's because they've rolled so many different types of games into one, rpg just happens to be one of them.

Same thing happened with Diablo 3. After announce of the Diablo 3 and revealing design of the game, someone decided to quicly make a game that looks exaclly like diablo 3. Now we have the "Torchlight".
As i remember Rage was announced way before Borderlands, go figure...

No 4 player co op for entire campaign, no class system, no stats, no lvl up, no special abilities or talent points. (not knocking RAGE)

Basic quest structure in a post apocalyptic shooter similar? OMG IZ B0RDERL@NDS TOO

That's a different situation. Runic Games, makers of Torchlight, is made up of many Blizzard veterans and they intended to make a Diablo style game. Many of them worked on Diablo itself.

Edit: I did the research, Borderlands was announced a few months before Rage in 2007

I could name off hundreds of differences as well. Now, if you've played both games, be honest with yourself about how similar the 2 games look and feel while you're playing them.

I don't think they're similar at all. Two completely different games.

Rage has no RPG elements. Rage doesn't have co-op. Rage isn't open-world at all. Rage has slightly better graphics.

They both take place in a desert, though BL's desert is just a desert while Rage is a devastated Earth.

Rage doesn't equal Borderlands 2. Part of Borderlands' charm is the cartoony art style that goes right along with it's humor. If Borderlands had the modern graphics or ground breaking graphics, it wouldn't have the same charm. I'm a fan of Borderlands and I simply love running that game on my PC with a friend over LAN in my home. He brings his laptop over and we have a field day with it. But without Borderlands' art style it wouldn't be Borderlands.

Actually Torchlight and Torchlight 2 are developed by those who created the original Diablo and DIablo 2. They started their own Indie company called Runic Games (formally members of Blizzard North). Those making Diablo 3 have more experience with WoW than Diablo.

They do have some similarities but they don't really feel the same to me as much as I liked Borderlands the world felt dead and there was little story Rage actually feels alive and so fa actually has a narrative. Of course simply being an fps its going to be similar to other fps's to a degree you throw in the driving and I can see where your coming from but Rage doesn't feel like Borderlands did.

Yeah but torchlight looks like diablo 3 not diablo 1 & 2, that was my point. It doesn't look like diablo 2 at all. but it looks exaclly like diablo 3.

For me, only playing the 60 minute trial of Borderlands, The beginning of both games seemed very similar. Take away the different graphics, the first thing I thought when starting Rage was that it reminded me of the way Borderlands played. Borderlands probably became a totally different game after the 60 minute trial I played though.
