Persuassion essay topics!

Post » Tue Oct 11, 2011 1:13 pm

So I'm going to be writing a persuasion essay for my English class fairly soon, and I lack a topic. For those who don't know: a persuasion essay is as the title implies, an essay where you are arguing one point of a topic. For example, i could argue that abortion is "right". It's not a discursive, where I talk about both sides, and take my stand on my preferred side. At first I was considering "Why PC gaming is better than console" but I don't think that would be quite [socially] acceptable :P So, fire away! (also, no politics, for the main reason that i don't find it very interesting, and writing an essay on it would be a chore)

Note: The following topics are banned: abortion, euthanasia, capital punishment, animal testing, and zoos. Basically, none of these boring over done topics that will bore my teacher (and eventually the examiner who gives my final grade).

There are some hot topics around like killing American citizens who have become terrorists without giving them the benefit of a trial, how to justify military intervention to alter political conditions in other countries, or what to do about finance industry people who basically committed fraud but didn't break the law. If you look around opinion sites there are infinite argumentative articles on such topics, taking a strong stand.

For all of these there are legal sides and moral sides. Even if you are not arguing both sides of the topic, you have to deal with both. E.g. if you are in favor of assassinating American terrorists, you have to give a legal basis and a moral argument. A common thread is doing what is "right" in a particular case versus creating rules that can ensure "right" gets done in a majority of the cases -- but getting the "right" outcome all the time is impossible because rules are always broad. You also often have to argue why one interest group should be favored over another interest group.

That is a topic on capital punishment which the OP is not allowed to write about in the essay.

You could make an argument for or against shutting down the NASA space programs, or you could discuss if we should tap into beautiful landscape for power or if we should seek to preserve nature at the cost of not getting more electricity. There is also discussions on hunting and big companies attempting to monopolize their field of business and if it is desirable or if competition should be encouraged instead.

You really shouldn't be lacking a topic, too many things to discuss but I guess I've given you a few.

"Capital punishment" usually refers to whether the death penalty should be permitted as a punishment in criminal law, whereas this is about whether a citizen loses constitutional rights by committing treason, without that being determined by a trial.

I live in the UK, so Americany topics aren't ideal. Although, the later part about the moral and legal basis is helpful, thanks ^_^

I rather like these topics, especially the NASA one (I feel as if I just contradicted myself...).

Indeed there is, but there is so many out there and choosing is hard enough, just wanted to get ideas from folk here and to see if there is any I never though initially.

The patent troll one is good, they are having a lot of defeats lately and there are cases in Britain. Ars Technica and Boing Boing cover that issue in depth.

Edit: Oops I was thinking of the copyright trolls that go after alleged "file sharers". Patent trolls are different, but there is one called Intellectual Ventures that is suing Motorola right now.

Steroid use in baseball. It would be so much more fun to watch if everyone used 'roids again. Sigh.

I just wrote a short one on why MLP is awesome :hehe:

You could do something like that. "Why my favorite X is awesome". I'd avoid big political subjects, that's what everyone's going to do. Do something personal.

Genetically modified foods is the only one I can think of that hasn't already been said. It can be fairly controversial.

Always a fun and interesting topic. Research Charles Tilly, and you've got pages worth of essay material right there.

Cheese, do we really need it?

Silly children's names and lawful ways of killing off the parents who come up with them.

God is bacon.

you pick.

I got millions of 'em. :P

Which toothbrush strength is best for the use in general populace?

The other day I was replacing an old one, and for the first time in my life I realized that they have different bristle strengths.
Being as smart as I am I decided that steel wool was the best solution. And hand soap...

So if anyone here complains about having to brush your teeth, can it!
