Unofficial Ace Combat Thread

Post » Thu Oct 13, 2011 5:33 am

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon released today so I figured now was as good a time as any to make an Ace Combat thread. So, without further adieu, commence discussion on Assault Horizon or your favorite games in the series, set up multiplayer games, etc.

So far http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/ace-combat-assault-horizon for Assault Horizon seem mixed, with some loving the gameplay changes and blatant pandering to the Call of Duty crowd, while others saying it's one of the weakest entries in the series. The number of times it's been called Call of Duty in the skies was enough to kill my excitement for the game, making it a bargain bin purchase. Very disappointing that the game seems to have lost its identity for the sake of mass appeal.

Your thoughts? Anyone pick the game up yet?

I'm heading out now, but if folks with the game wanna drop their Gamertags and PSN ID's then I'll make an index here when I get back.

Played the demo (on PS3) and even though it felt like "Tom Clancy's Ace Combat" i felt the new gameplay mechanics flowed pretty well. I have it pre-ordered, but it won't be released till friday here, so may not get to play it untill next week

I don't like how they moved to the real world from the fictional one they used in previous games, and that propably means there won't be massive superweapons or shapeshifting prototype fighters, but there's been such drought of aerial combat games that beggars can't really be choosers here :hehe:

As for the rest of the series, played and own all that were released on Playstation (not portables) and have always enjoyed their arcadey dogfigths. I'd say Squadron Leader ("Unsung War" outside europe) is my favorite.

Noticed this line on a webstore's page for Assault Horizon:

Scenario edited by a renowned New York Times best selling military author

So it is Tom Clancy's Ace Combat :lmao:

From what I'm hearing, it's not the Ace Combat that I fell in love with. Really disappointing, especially considering it'll be a few years at least until we get another entry in the series (which might just end up continuing this Westernized theme). I wouldn't mind so much if there were other flight combat games with awesome stories, but Ace Combat is it.

Yeah, it's just not the same with realistic setting. It may work for it, but it won't be a "real" Ace Combat.

I suddenly feel sympathy for the Fallout dinosaurs... ^_^

The last air combat game I played was Combat Flight Simulator WWII, which Ace Combat games would you guys recommend?

Well, Ace Combat is definetly not a simulator, the planes have so much ammunition they wouldn't get off the ground in reality :lmao:

I'm only familiar with PS 1 and 2 games, and of the PS2 ones i'd say Unsung War is the best (AKA "Squadron Leader" in some parts of the world). It has a nice selection of missions and fighters, only problem with it is that the secondary weapon is unchangable unlike in the other games. Belkan War is a good one too (my avatar is it's cover art ;)), but Unsung War offers more content. The first PS2 one, Shattered Skies (or Distant Thunder) isn't bad either, but it looks and feels old compared to the other two.

I have Ace Combat 6. I can't get past the mission where you have to shoot down that giant floaty ship plane thing with all the other planes flying around it. I get shot down a lot. I only bought it because I wanted an air combat type game. I was enjoying it up until that giant floaty ship plane thing with all the other planes flying around it. After trying to get past that mission 20+ times I took the disk out, put it in a it's case and put the game on the shelf. Where it's sat for I dunno, a year or more.

I had no interest in the new game.
