How building a community works today

:::The other way around that they think currenty = same as before

Going through all the interviews and stuff about Rage and in general industry, i have heard how they just simply are a bit wrong or say it wrong , but what they really mean i don't know.

There goes the talk "if there turns out to be a large audience, we'll support that with DLC and dedicated servers are not out of the question"

The whole idea of that is flawed; you don't release a new IP and wait people to show up, especially in a crowded release window.

Another point, if nobody would protest about the crappy options screen, they wound't make them. When i saw the menus, it made me want to cry. It's feels so disrespectful and even criminal to put something as casualish as this to run on a PC. It's just so insultive that they cannot REALIZE how much DAMAGE THAT PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT MAKES - it makes people go to talk bad about it - bad word = a visit to the Bay (if it's even worth that)

A full blown game , everything great splendid perfect ok - without PC options , makes 90% of bad and negative word from people.

Gamers trust between them selfs more than they trusts any company or any announcement or anything of any sort of any kind. One little sideeffect is misinformation, that's when you got a problem.

There also seems to be these big WORRY about the "casuals setting advanced consoles could make their game unplayable" WELL WHO CARES ABOUT THE NOOBS NOT KNOWING HOW TO SET THEIR CONFIG - THAT'S NOT OUR JOB TO CARE AND NOT AN EXCUSE FOR THOSE THAT WANT ADVANCED SETTINGS - This is maddness who thought of that anyways ? ... read the patch notes and you'll get what i mean, Fix the game properly for PC diehards (that make most of the bad words) and stop babysitting noobs.

The poing is EVERYONE on the PC wants advanced settings and to do something with the game - this is kind of intentonal pissing of the market. The market that makes the MOST talk and spread of the game you're poking it even more to make it even more pissed up and down and they'll not stand silent, they will always retalliate.

It's to me personally okay to talk without some big brother, responses from devs, but in this MOMENT , at this VITAL moment , it's really stupid to be talking how "PC is not the lead platform" distancing away instead of showing some extra effort to care - well just don't want to see a PC version at all if it's not designed for PC.

The "surprise" about the intensity of options screen leads me to a :sadvaultboy: everyone expected a "Doom3 options" screen. Not only that PC has high standards , EXPECTATIONS from Rage were SO MUCH HIGHER because the ID LEGACY - Everyone expected they will outdone it self from the previous title.

I just don't see how carmack was surprised with that, and well i know the release was stressful but ... let's take this whole thing as experience and a big test, no reason to take it negatively.

Admitingly , while mostly, but no , it weren't just the drivers, It was the rage auto-configurer. I never liked stuff like that and i KNEW it's not going to work, way before the game was released, it wasn't at all surprising to me.

The same thing happend with Crysis 2 , the vast majority of the fanbase is PC. The game is a total console wreck out of my smelly back side. The PC people are nuking Crytek and pressuring them on the forums ALL THE TIME , some of the moderators have gone to reach out to BEG the community to stop complaining. It's a mess there and FINALLY the Crytek CEO announced that Crysis 2 has officially BACKFIRED admitting that publicly. They released the game 3 months earlier due to EA pressure, most certainly to fit the EA march fiscal year end period.

  • You are a PC developer making one of the most original PC games (high replay value)
  • You see stupid mainstream trends on consoles for quick cash fast less work
  • You risk your whole studio converting your PC masterpiece to a console hamsterwheel
  • You release your game to the public "expecing 75% sales on console" [ob-fkn-viously]
  • You piss off all your PC fans
  • You find out the majority of your forums are PC
  • You find out that angry PC guys are severely damaging your company image and making your forums a mess
  • You find out that your previous title sold more on one platform that your latest title on 3 platforms

Crysis: Replay value exceeding most PC games
Crysis 2: Replay value of my dog's poo
Rage: Replay value is great althougt not enough for RPG, who cares , it's not an RPG.
Rage's replay value will be extended with the let's hope modding community is born. Time ticks .. and ticks , faster that editor is released, the better.

Im not trying to rise dust , these are just facts, i know they're in pressure , but please don't make this thread negative, just offer solutions and ideas.

One thing as the motto of this: Just better to don't release the PC version if you design a console game. I rather skip it than to go through a half baked game.

Note that this is not my direct opinion about Rage since i know the game will get fixed and modding will make it ... well , could be great. Lessons learned for Doom4. If it doesn't have 50 options on the menus , it'll just not be a worthy PC game. Doom4 had immense expectations IMMENSE. 3 times higher than Rage had for me. I would be seriously disappointed if Doom4 were to have these console-style menus. It's just makes the whole game look crap. A hot girl with ugly face.

Okay so back to the DLC thing ... the thinking is wrong:

You don't suppose to WAIT for the COMMUNITY to SHOW UP in order to support it with "DEE-EL-SEE" (what a gay word). You FIX and IMPROVE your OWN game NO MATTER if the COMMUNITY protests about it or not. No matter if the mention it or not. You keep patching the freaking game if you didn't make that before - or the high expectations community would make a lot of bad anti-marketing.
That's how you make a new IP successful. You do the WORK and they will jump on. THEY DONT jump if you wait for them to magically jump, "if they jump we'll make DLC to support them" - that's just wrong.

That's why with this thinking the industry has - a PC release is doomed to fail. A PC release is doomed to fail if you spend effort on consoles
This is obvious and it's NOT any sort of "oh todays trends are different"

It's not the trends - it's the INABILITY of the industry to produce high quality experience. The technology never mattered, it always matterd the design, effort into advanced options and features for people to play with when they finish the game. Features that make game depth, replayability, moddability, tweakability, and mostimportantly stuff that doesn't look and feel casual.

I think you have some good pts but go a bit overboard on menus and such. I could give a crap about them, focus on the game the rest is icing.

The mods for rage and levels will be few because the learning curve will be so much higher.

I think if I was I'd I would do the same and focus on console that is where the sales are... You compared doom sales to rage which is unfair because doom is a franchise at that time in 2oo2 was so highly anticipated and piracy wasn't as rampant as it is now. Not to mention the leap in graphics that it made is more dramatic than what rage has done.

I want Id to survive and if that's making a game focused on a console and if it sacrifices a more flexible menu then im good. Yes I wish the PC platform was back to what it was in the 90s and early 2k built that train I think has left the building and unless you are blizzard there is no way you design the game first for PC. They just need to get better designing both and I think they did an admirable job in the gameplay accounting for both console and PC players... That is why there are so many weapon and ammo options as well as engineering...you can play rage just pretty much how you want to. I'm ranting now but if they included a real nightmare difficulty unwound have been happier!
