Rage getting detail textures in next patch!

We have a bicubic-upsample+detail texture option for the next PC patch that will help alleviate the blurry textures in Rage.

In case you don't know what a "detail texture" is, it is basically having a small texture with some 'generic detail' that can easibly be tiled many times over textures. Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War do this a lot, and it makes the textures seem very sharp and detailed, even though the base textures are often poor.

Examples of detail-texturing from http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/TerrainAdvancedTextures.html:

He only mentioned PC, though I don't see why it shouldn't be doable on PS3 or Xbox 360 for that matter.

It might be too expensive for ps3 and xbox and add to texture popin issues?

Seems unlikely - it's usually just a small texture with little to no memory footprint that can seamlessly tile over the textures. If anything, it would do a better job of hiding the texture pop-in.

Game looks fine the way it is.... but this is EPIC news.

So pretty much all the texture issues for the PC version are going to be resolved, and probably alot of crash fixes on the next patch.

And fixed within only a couple weeks of launch too!!! :)

Well the last patch came out on US Saturday. I am hoping they do the same with this one.

Im sure there will be complainers, im guessing "alleviate" means just that...I wouldn't expect a jawdropping difference-- trying to keep my expectations low. This obviously a trade-off or they would have had it in the game at launch, was probably even in there in previous builds.
