Problems with a 42" Phillips LCD

Post » Sun Oct 16, 2011 11:16 pm

Ok, I'm not sure if this is actually a problem or maybe because I'm not used to it, but when we put in a DVD on this TV the picture comes out looking...amateurish? I mean it's like the movie was filmed by a camcorder - everything looks smooth and unreal. Also, it kinda appears as if the movie is going too fast (imagine 1.2x normal speed), yet we checked it out using a stop watch and there's nothing actually wrong with it. It's an illusion that it's going too fast, maybe because it looks so smooth?

What gives? There are A LOT of options in the TV options menu, and we mess around with them, but the problem is still there.

One option which may I thought was the culprit is "Phillips HD natural motion", but if it's set to off it makes the movie look bad on this big TV screen.

Tonight we're trying out a blu ray to check if the problem persists, or if maybe it's because this huge monitor doesn't work well with the quality of DVDs.

So, anyone had the same problems? Any fixes?

disable that crap or put it on low .

I notice the odd looking motion on my TV whenever that is enabled and it aggravates me.

Could also be a bad movie on dvd :P

Nah it happened in 4 DVDs, certain it's from the TV.

It does look like these fancy options which are at fault!

You might have messed with the zoom/aspect settings

I always set it widescreen (well we set it once, I assume it chooses the default setting for each movie). I'll take a look at those though.

EDIT: Nope Steeler.

On most new TV's you'll have quick option picture settings on your remote that will allow you to change it from like dynamic, movie, standard and so on. Though I would still check your TV's aspect ratio settings as well. good luck!

Yep I saw that too! I hate having to change settings between watching a movie, and then a video game, and then another video game!

BTW, it's not my TV. Only mentioning it so if I buy a TV in the future you'll know I'm not buying another one. :P

If I remember correctly (don't quote me on this... I'm kinda drunk and I'm really stretching my memory here) some TVs force videos to 60FPS (as opposed to the normal 24). Maybe that has a hand in it? I know my roommate's 42" Samsung does that with some movies.

edit: One grammar mistake. A miracle considering my normal drunk typing/texting skills.

I see, is there a way I could check that?

Indeed, most modern TVs have some kind of image interpolation function that make the video more "smooth". One just have to turn it off.
