What to do with a broken PS3

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:50 pm

So it's a week before Skyrim gets released and some one leaves my PS3 on overnight with a pile of clothes blocking the air intake. I was pretty pissed when I went downstairs and discovered what had happened but was relieved when it seemed to work for a while after cooling down. But then all manner of wierd things started happening, to inverted colour and rainbows on the screen to out right crashing. After some investigation and research online and on some forums I discovered that the most likely cause is a crack in the GPU from over heating. I phoned sony and since I'm a few weeks out of my warranty period they expect me to pay £130 to get it fixed, something I already did before when one of their software updates bricked my blueray drive. So I refuse to get it fixed this time, but dont know what else I can do with it -- I've tried to find some where to recycle it or even trade it in for repair parts but I can't find anything. I've already decided to buy a 250gig slimline model for £170 rather than fixing a release model 40gig ps3, so again repairing is out of the question. But what else can I do?

We once executed a console that was an obvious insurgency traitor..

took it behind the rec bunker, and laid into it with all manner of firearms, until it was utterly disintegrated

just a thought :whistling:

While desstroying it will be fun, I won't be using a fire arm if I did. But i'll still definately be looking for something a little more productive to do with it.

I've been thinking of buying a charger mount for PS3 controllers and building it into the chasis to make a stylish way to store/charge my controllers. Or maybe I'll make it into a docking station for my iPod.

I sold mine on eBay about a year back for $150. It was a 20GB launch model, so it might've been a bit more desirable for the backwards compatibility, but ya never know.

you might be able to slave the old HHD to your new one, effectively adding a drive to your PS3..

the controllers will come in handy most likely..

other than that..

Probably will do that. Then I'll test how resistant the surviving parts/chasis are to a moving van wheel. Or maybe I'll accidentally drop some dumbells on it. Something satisfying no doubt.

Stop and think about how you payed twice the price of an xbox and it STILL broke. Then buy an xbox, a live membeship and try playing online WITHOUT PSnetworks lag.

I didn't pay twice the amount of an Xbox, maybe £50 more, my xbox broke after a month, and I've never once lagged on psn. Ever. The only lag i've experienced is those few idiots on games lie COD or MGS or other pvp games who introduce lagswitches to their ethernet cables, something that can be done on all platforms. I enjoy my playstation, I like the lack of cartoony sprites and I love it's exclusives far more than I like xbox's. I will consider getting an xbox again, but never inplace of a ps3.

Besides. I've decided to experiment with the carcass of my PS3. A freind of mine who's a bit of a whiz with electronics has agreed to help me convert it into a playstation laptop, if all goes well I'll do the same with my new slim.
