Is it just leapfrog?

I just finished the first 2 weapon races, and all it felt like I was doing was playing leapfrog. As soon as u die you go right behind the people that killed you and you kill them, lather, rinse, repeat... It almost had a mario cart feel to it. What am I missing about the driving strategy?

I don't find myself close enough to the enemies to worry about position changes, I'm normally far ahead. For me it is just a matter of trying to time the shields for the right times, making sure that the rockets don't wipe me out when they do get sight of me. Maybe that's the idea that you should try out, the shield timing could be the difference between getting a good lead, or being stuck with the group. Remember to use your mines as well, they can be quite useful.

It must be a timing issue for me. I was throwing everything down trying to get enough of a lead so they couldnt hit me any more, but I couldn't get there. Thanks for the tip.

Yea, if you're far ahead enough it won't be like leap frog. ;)

Very effective on the Southern Highway races, you can just tootle along taking reasonable enough care if you get far enough ahead on the first lap.

I only ever lost one race (didn't come in first) and that was because when I flew came to the finish line there was a massive jump and my car got flipped and blew up on a rock. I played it a second time and won by sliding past the finish line on my side. It was a pretty awesome ending.
