1. Easy to learn map creation tools for Mappers: Without a doubt, I cannot stress my amazement at the still thriving community of mappers still making maps for classic doom. Slaughtermaps, tyson maps, speed running etc. I dont know of too many games that still have such a community. I know that Doom is most likely using the mega texturing feature, which can easily destroy most, if not all homebrew designers who want to make their own maps. But I can hope.
Horror is Great, But DooM isnt about only about that: When I played the first dooms, I was holding the trigger of my gatling gun while listening to some blood pumping rock music. I wasnt horrified by cinematic camera angles showing me pentagrams and how evil everything is and how I was supposed to be scared. Doom 3, in most cases, still had the oppressive Hell is scarier than everything, I never felt like I was conquering hell, I was always in fear of it. The classic doom, I felt like no matter what they threw at me, all I needed was space to run and I could spray their guts all over the pentagrams. For DooM4, lets bring some brute force back into the game, bring back some Hope (gasp). We are back on earth, bring some armed civilians for me to protect, we have the technology to make some allied AI (sparingly though, the player should do most of the work).
Dead bodies that stay: There arent many games anymore that keep dead bodies. DooM had the ability to keep the dead bodies of enemies there forever (yea I know they were single sided sprites that didnt have angles). I could backtrack to areas and see the handiwork of my weapons, reminders of past battles. It was one of the only games where dead bodies could actually hinder you if you managed to kill all of them at a choke point.
Meaty Sound effects: Even though there were sounds taken from a sound CD that was popular at the time, DooM burned these sound effects into my brain. I dont want muted machine guns that mimic the vacuum of space, I want beefy, loud and angry sound effects.
Organic Hell and Human Technology Play up the themes of organic hell vs human technology. I want to see airstrikes and carpet bombings of demonic bases, I want to see demons pouring into breaches with pinkies leading the charge. Demons exist in pure rage, attack straight on with muscle, teeth and flesh, while humans use teamwork, tactics and superior firepower.
