Well, It's been about... 2 years since I last posted anything on here. But since Skyrim is coming out, I shall no longer lay dormant.
Just out of curiosity, anyone remember me?

Anyway, so I get bored very easily, I got Windows 7, it's awesome. I love it. But like I said, I get bored easily.
So I decided to download Ubuntu.
Can someone give me the gist of Ubuntu (No,I'm not asking for someone to tell me what it does. I wouldn't have downloaded otherwise,) like... Why do you use it? What is the deal with remaining anonymous on there? How do you? Why would you want to? All those sort of things.
Do you use it?
Please, share your experiences.

I use it on a couple old PCs. Mainly because its lightweight, free, and customizable.

honestly i don't like the ubuntu-trend as a gnu/linux distro... I've used many different distro but i always had a copy of mandrake (a.k.a. mandriva) installed on my PC now i'm using the community managed mandriva based distro called Mageia. Mandrake or mandriva was the very first distro to have a control panel system to manage the OS which is quite similar to the windows control panel. You don't need to know shellscript to tweak the OS. You should try it. the community is composed of former mandriva soft. and other big guys from the user community and the support are far better than on it was on mandriva...
mageia right now is good looking and has a great hardware support like most linux distros that keep updating their kernels...


sorry i've repeated several times the old distro that i used.

So why would you not use it on your current rig?
(Except for the obvious fact that they can't play most games)

I do run Linux Mint on here (very much like Ubuntu). The main reason I like Windows is for games. Also I am much more experienced with Windows, so I prefer it more.

I'll have to check that one out too.
I'm trying to decide which Linux distro to download...

1. Because learning is fun, open source is awesome, and it's useful.
2-4. What? What do you mean stay anonymous on there? Ubuntu doesn't steal your information or anything like that. Are you asking how to make it more secure?
5. I've not used Ubuntu desktop since... like 2008. Still use Kubuntu on some systems where I want to be lazy and just use PPAs instead of compiling, and I'll usually put Lubuntu or Kubuntu on other people's computers when they want/need a linux distro. I also have deployed an Ubuntu server, but the only reason I chose Ubuntu over any other distro was so I could put my work on http://maps.ubuntu.com/map/ Any distro would have done, as it's just a simple LAMP. Gnome/Unity svck, basically.

Basically, just mess around, learn, and have fun. Even if you don't like it as your main desktop, Linux is an extremely useful OS to learn for diagnosis/repairs/recovery.

Go with Lubuntu or Xubuntu and it will be even lighterweight and its still Ubuntu. I use Lubuntu and love it, I don't need to deal with Unity, or KDE nor GNOME 3 on other distros. So nice.

@ Starforce9: i do play games on linux... and honestly some windows games (like Half life 2, Lord of the Rings online, perfect world, Dungeons and dragons online, brink, left for dead 2 and some other games) run better win CrossOver Games software than on windows.... the ATI and Nvidia proprietary drivers are required to be installed in order to have good performance. CrossOver is a proprietary version of wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) developed by CodeWeavers (the comapny that created wine!). If Bethesda follow the trend that id Software created by supporting linux it would be awesome because most of id software games have a native version for linux (atm i've got Doom 3, D3: Rise of Evil, Enemy Territory, Enemy Territory: Quake wars installed on my linux box, also i've got Prey which uses idtech 4 engine that have a linux port too). Unfortunately ETQW is the only game that has some issues on linux, the rendering system is broken... I've got a geforce gtx 460 driver installed so i guess it has something to do with an error in the rendering system. Doom 3 is a old game that runs better than etqw even with new hardware and drivers....

It's a lot more customizable than Windows and a lot less bloated. I'd make it my main OS if it weren't for the game compatibility issues, and some internet problems I have using it.

Did you try disabling IPv6?

Otherwise, are you on wireless? Do you notice the same bad speeds on wired? (may be your WNIC isn't well supported)

Nope, but I never enabled it in the first place so it may be disabled already.


I use a wired connection, but through a PCI card. Would plugging it into the motherboard help?

It's enabled by default in pretty much every Firefox build on Linux.
