Firefox 5.0

Post » Sat Dec 03, 2011 8:10 am

The title of this thread pretty much sums it up. Is anyone else having this problem? I've been using Firefox for years and it's always been very stable, but now it's crashing literally every 20 minutes or so. It seems to be indiscriminate as to what site it's on or how many tabs are open.

I've even disabled all of my add-ons, to no effect. I've run an anti-virus scan to be safe, but it's turned up nothing.

It was a huge crashfest for me too. I rolled back to 3.6 and am back to smooth sailing.

Chrome has been pretty reliable to me. I only have firefox just incase Chrome decides to be stupid. So if I were you I would get a back up web browser, like chrome, to use when firefox screws up. And I would probably try and downgrade to a lower version of firefox, then maybe reinstall the update.

Is your memory capping out just before it crashes?

5 is a solid as a rock for me - I actually run Fx8a nightly as my main browser and that is (generally) crash free. Try the http://forums.mozillazine.org/ to see if there is anything there.

Since others are having no problems with FF5, it must be something with my computer rather than the browser, and if it's possible to remedy it, I'd prefer to do this rather than switch browser or downgrade my current version.

Um... I have no idea. How do I check this? There's no mention of it, just the generic 'Well this is embarassing...' FF error message. I should add that it always restores my session immediately without any problems.

I'll have a look there. If anyone here can help though, please let me know in the meantime.

My memory usage surged from 31% to over 80% when it would crash. My mouse would get really sluggish for about two seconds before the crash.

I haven't experienced this. There's absolutely nothing to indicate that it's about to crash until it crashes. (Just crashed again there. :( )

Firefox 5 seems to hate Google+. Ever time I enter a hangout, it shoots my memory usage way up (like to 700MB). Crashes then ensue. ~350MB is normal for my FF usage as I keep 4-6 tabs open all of the time.

I've never used Google+. And I'm not sure why 700mb of memory usage would cause it to crash if I have 6GB of RAM and nothing else open...

Check the physical memory usage. I'm not sure if newer versions of Windows have this natively or not, but see if there is some sort of system monitor in the task manager (Ctrl + alt + delete).

If not download http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653. It's much better than the built-in task manager. Click on the graphs in the top bar and see if your RAM gradually gets closer to your physical limit (6 GB).

Did you try updating your browser plugins? (Flash, Silverlight (:yuck:), PDF reader, etc)? http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/

Did you try disabling browser plugins?

Did you try a clean install?

Mine hasn't crashed, but it is ridiculously slow. I went back to using chrome as my main browser again until they can fix it.

No stability problems with Firefox 5 on my desktop nor my netbook. Haven't even noticed any difference. Maybe it is faster? I upgrade to ff4 a several weeks ago, totally bummed that the God of War theme I was using was not compatible. ;_;
