TES like games

Post » Sat Dec 03, 2011 10:58 am

I've played Daggefall, which I loved, and found to have some very interesting ideas. Too bad TES hasn't actually tried to go back to it, with the whole randomly generated towns/quests and huge epicness. Morrowind is one of my favourite games simply because the lore and atmosphere/exploration is so amazing. I still play vanilla morrowind sometimes, graphics to me don't matter one bit, since I can still become immersed in games like Super Metroid, DF etc.

From these suggestions I think I'll try Mount & Blade, Might & Magic and Ultima (there are so many, but I guess I'll get the newest one?).

Definitely not a Diablo clone, although the first town and the dungeon there may make it seem somewhat like one. However, the rest of the game plays much more like an open-world RPG, just isometric rather than first-person.

What's combat like? Is it just 'click click click" with the mouse? WASD controls or mouse-click? Any mods or unofficial patches I need to be aware of? I own the game, I just figured it looked kind of dorky and diablo-y, so I decided to strike it off my "to-play" list and put it up for sale. I mean, if you had to choose between the Baldur's Gate series and Divine Divinity, which would you pick? Or Daggerfall vs. Divine Divinity? I can only play so-many 100-hour games in one life-time.

Personally, I'd take BG. But I played DD on the 360, so it might be completely different on the pc.

Combat is pretty standard action-RPG point-and-click (game control is mostly point-and-click). The reason I say it's not a Diablo clone is that in contrast to such games, where most of the game other than combat is just a brief set up to "go out into the wilderness/dungeon and kill everything that moves", there's a much greater balance in DD between combat, character interaction, exploration, etc, that is much more in line with the style of open-world RPGs than action-RPGs. Also, since you mentioned that it seemed kind of dorky to you I should mention that the game does have a quirky sense of humor to it- most people I've heard speak about the game viewed this as a positive thing, but some people may not care for it as much. As for comparing it to the BG series, I'd definitely rank BG2 higher than DD, but DD and BG1 are close (I'd probably rank DD slightly higher). The length of DD is also probably closer to 50-60 hours, so while still lengthy it isn't the 100+ hour marathon that some RPGs are.

Personally, I'd take BG. But I played DD on the 360, so it might be completely different on the pc.

Divine Divinity was only released on the PC. You're probably thinking of the sequel, Divinity 2: Ego Draconis (later re-released as The Dragon Knight Saga).

You are right. And I am an idiot. Well, I would still rather have BG than Divinity 2.

This thread is exactly why I don't even bother with other game studios offerings. I would love to find something comparable, but Bethesda's TES simply ROCKS!
Arx Fatalis does seem close. I bought it and got bored quick, and then lost the disc somewhere.
It would seem that other companies would note Bethesda's success, and make something truly similar, but either they don't feel compelled to copy, so they simply don't have the equal talent, which is hard to believe looking at the appearance of some FPS shooters (Black OPs, for instance) that are out; meaning technically of course, visually and otherwise.
But it takes good writing to pull off an excellent RPG, also.
...And because the Fallout series is similar in the idea of first person, free roaming, being able to ignore the MQ, buying and selling loot, I like that also.

If it weren't for Bethesda, I wouldn't even bother with games, and that's a likely fact. Thanks Bethesda.
