Enjoyable free RPGs

Post » Sun Dec 04, 2011 2:38 am

So, I desperately need something to distract me while I am on the road, what are some free RPGs (NON BROWSER BASED) that you enjoy? Also, not flash games. Full games, ones that you have to download. But that are also free. Yes, I know its a tall order, but I have confidence in you.

I'm about to download NetHack.....but I have no idea what type of PC I have (hardy har har, yes I'm a console player).

I mean, its a Dell, and it runs on Windows. That's about as much as I know. Any way I can tell what it runs on specifically?

Hit your windows key, search 'dxdiag', click the program that pops up and you'll find everything you need to compare your PC's specs to the required ones for NetHack.

The link that says Windows 95/98/NT/2000/Me/XP/Vista.

You may need this (only read the basics to avoid spoilers):

http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/products.html is a charming little company that's been producing traditional (if a bit old-fashioned) role-playing games since when I was a wee lad. Have a look at their products. I remember playing the Exile series until well into the small hours as a kid, but they've evolved since then, making newer and more polished games as time goes on. They're technically only free as demos, but the demos themselves tend to be long enough for you to have hours of enjoyment.

Errr... pretty sure the OP asked "no browser games".

Go for The Elder Scrolls I: Arena and The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. On these forums, they should be a given.

They're available as free downloads http://www.elderscrolls.com/arena/ and http://www.elderscrolls.com/daggerfall/.

You could always look into RPG Maker games for some old school RPG adventures with turn based combat... there are a lot of high quality games available (although most of the largest ones are in japanese)
