Eye surgery

Post » Mon Dec 05, 2011 6:52 pm

So in about a month I will be 18, and I have been given the chance to have corrective eye surgery. I am interested in this, but also slightly nervous, has anyone here had Laser eye surgery. My parents have had it, and they seem to like it. I have been wearing glasses for about 10 years now, and I am a bit sick of them. I have terrible eye sight without them, (I mean not being able to see/read anything further then 6 inches away) and I must admit, not having to worry about them getting broken or lost would be a great thing. If anyone here has it, what are your thoughts on it, and is it a great improvement over glasses/contacts?

I think it is, but I have heard it's not something that lasts forever. I've had a couple moms from my church that got it 2 or 3 years ago, and they are saying it is starting to ware off. You just never know how well they are going to preform the operation. But I think 2 or 3 years of being able to see clearly is more then likely worth it.

18 is young for corrective eye surgery without good reason. Most optomitrists I know want you to be a few years older and have a stable prescription (the office I work with really doesn't like considering it before 25 with a stable prescription for the last two).

I would go with what Defron said. Everything he says makes sense.

Hmm well I may wait a bit then, though I have had a prescription for about 18 months that seems to work fine for most things.

I have to agree I recently went to my optometrist and even he said I had laser eye surgery as an option, but didn't need it i'm 28 years old. With Laser Eye surgery you also have to consider repeat treatments which I heard can be quite common for people. I would have to say unless you have some extreme nearsighted/farsighted issues then I would hold off on it till you're atleast 25 as Def said or possibly till you are 30. A final thing to consider is over time as you age your eyes will change sometimes going from Near to Far or Far to Near.

If you are really intent on getting LES I would recommend doing research on it then consulting your Optometrist.

Do not do it until your 20s or until changes in your prescription have settled down (and you can't go by what you think has happened in the last 18 months - only your doctor can confirm it after an exam). An Ophthalmologist shouldn't even consider doing it for you until you're 21 - that's the earliest the FDA recommends it. Your eyes change too much until your early 20s (considering your body is still developing until then).

My grandfather and grandmother had it done 6 years ago(they're both in their 60s), they now have perfect vision both far off and close up and recommend it to everyone they meet.

Best I can give you, they are very happy with it though.

It seemed good for my dad after he got it about 3 or 4 years ago, but he needs reading glasses again. I have pretty terrible eyesight and was considering it. However, a friend of the family who works with medical professionals has pointed out that he's never met an ophthalmologist who's had corrective surgery. It did make me rethink it afterwards.
