Animated Gif as your 'Avatar'

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 3:50 am

So I have read a ton of sites and threads, pvssyd with a few people, about making an animated gif picture as your avatar?

I know how to find them, but when I do it doesn't work. -Yes it uploads them, but when I view my profile, the avatar is just like a regular pic?

Is it within the 90x120 dimensions limit? Automatic resizing breaks the animation.

Yeah they were mostly 90x90

Care to link to one of the ones you've tried, but refuses to work?

Almost all of them are too wide, so the forums resize them. When the forum resizes them, they become static.

To maintain their animation you need to resize them yourself, GIMP can do the job

Yup, just go image->scale image and make sure that the width is 90 or less. Then when you save it, make sure you save it as an animation (Gimp will ask you whether to save it as an animation or flatten it)

I've tried resizing them on gimp before, but they end up looking really bad for some reason. The one I have now was also a GIF at one point, but I decided that this single frame looks much better than the distorted animated one.

In addition to GIMP, you could also use http://gifmagic.com to change the size. I had some trouble resizing my Fluttershy avatar with GIMP(all layers kept showing at once), found that site and tried it out instead of spending two hours scouring through GIMP tutorials/help pages for one avatar.
