An issue with my monitor?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 11:51 am

Hi guys, I occasionally see faint, flickering horizontal lines on my monitor. It often does it on these forums, I've noticed it occasionally in Oblivion, and it always happens in Minecraft. Oddly enough, I think it may be the color gray (these forums, underground in Minecraft, and it happens most often in Oblivion at night).

I have an EVGA GTX 570 and a 22" LED ViewSonic monitor. Either one of those the problem?

Thanks. I think I'm about to go insane (and I want to be rid of the problem in time for Skyrim).

I would guess it's the monitor, not the graphics card. If you have a console and the ability to plug it into the monitor that would be an easy to way to find out for sure. If it's the monitor I'm not sure what could fix it, maybe adjusting the settings.

I'll try to hook it up to my Xbox.

Is it's because it's ViewSonic? Is that a cruddy company?

And what settings could cause that?

I don't think ViewSonic is a bad company, but you could have gotten a bad apple, how long have you had it/used it? As for settings, if it didn't happen when you first got it, it's not a setting I don't think unless you were messing with them. I was just offering suggestions, I don't think a setting could even cause that to be honest, but I figured if I suggested it, maybe something would pop up in your mind and help you lol.

If it doesn't do it on your Xbox, then it might be your card or the cable from your monitor to your card or the DVI connector (or vga depending on what you use) could be bad as well.

I just bought an Acer monitor today and I have the exact same problem. Anything that is dark colored, such as this forum, has lines that flicker down the screen. I'm in the same boat as you and I can't find anything online :/

Do you have the same card as him? Is your monitor an LED as well?

LCD monitor, and I have a failing 9800m GS. I think it may just be a faulty monitor or cable for me, or it may be the dying GPU. All that I found out online is about refresh rates and loose cables.

Well then we sorted out two things, it's probably not the GPU for either of you. (Well in your case it could be, which doesn't help us at all!) And the other thing we might have sorted out, it might not be the monitors themselves. I never heard of refresh rates doing that but I don't have that much experience in that area, and I'm sure you guys didn't put it above or below the default anyways (usually no point in doing so). I would guess the cables, and if you have another cable I would test that to see if you get the same problem.

I've had the monitor for a month and a half, and I first noticed it 3 weeks or so ago.

Got the new cable plugged up (VGA, with one Digital converter going directly into my mobo, haven't tried another converter yet. My monitor has some weird slot for it, and i couldn't find one to fit it.), and played Minecraft for a minute or two. It wasn't as bad, but still noticeable.
