Unity Game Engine and Unreal Real Engine?

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 3:02 am

I've already stated that I've had some ideas for games, and thanks to someone on hear( Sorry but I forgot who ) they suggested to use the unity engine, I've have been tinkering with it an I have got to say it is a bit easy to catch on to using, I like playing around with the textures but before I got into actual development.

Is the Unity Engine a good engine to develop a 2.5D sidescrolling game on?

Also, I have heard there is really good Unreal engine out there that is good from making isometric, open world and sidescrolling games, does anyone know what it is called?

I figured if it is good for open world it will be even better for me to develop a side scroller on it.

Unity3D and http://www.udk.com/ are great engines for 3D games. For what you're doing, however, I'd suggest you go with something simpler, as you'd be wasting all the 3D rendering on a few objects. Plus, the interfaces aren't much fun to learn. In their stead, I suggest using the http://www.udk.com/. Try it out.

Thanks man, and as of right now, I'm not trying to produce more than 1 level for this game. But maybe I'll be able to do more levels on the engine you suggested. Thanks again.

No problem, dude. Best advice I can give is to take it slow. If you build up a huge story and everything first and exert all your energy and patience in the first week, if you're anything like me, you'll give up on that project. You have the right idea taking it one level at a time...but don't think that because you're only making one level you should have tons of cool features in it. Let the game evolve at a comfortable pace. Good luck, bro. Your initiative is refreshing. :D

Thanks and yeah I wasn't going to try to rush myself, that whats happens when I play a game if I beat the game too quickly I'll never touch it again, had uncharted 2 for 2 years and I haven't put in over 2 hours of gameplay after I beat it(in 2 days). And yeah I got the engine you suggested downloading right now

I couldn't tell you anything about the newest Unreal engine, but I have been playing around in Unity and I am quite impressed by the vast range of what it can do. If you are fairly comfortable with it then you may just want to stick with it. I myself am attempting an isometric view turn based combat system in Unity, so just about anything is possible.

yeah thanks man, I've restarted, not because it's hard(it's actually quite easy for me) but because I didn't like where I was head with my idea with the level design. I got one now, and it is working out pretty good,
