I support a number of Thompson devices for an ISP in the UK - and did for their forebare Alcatel when I was a tech at BigPond in Aus... And yeah, they're a pain in the Neck when it comes to NAT.

Thompson seem to be the "home brand" of routers... It seems almost every ISP supplies them by default.

I can't recommend a specific modem (as I'm a VDSL user myself rather than ADSL), a lot of the folk I work with who are swear by Netgear modem/routers - It's pretty hard to go wrong with anything Netgear. They're simple enough for the beginner, and technical enough for the expert.
