Anti-virus

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 5:37 pm

My BitDefender time is running out soon and I'm wondering if I really need a paid antivirus?
Are there any free ones that are just as good or is it really better to buy one?

This. I use it on all my network connected (Windows) PCs.

I concur. Look no further, this is all you need. I've been using it for quite a while now and I'm positively amazed.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials (Free) as well as Kaspersky Internet Security (Paid). I use 2 programmes, you know the saying better safe than sorry so if one misses something the other should detect it (Hopefully). You couls always use 2 free anti virus programmes though or even just 1 if your less paranoid than me :cryvaultboy:

MSE for me as well. I have run it since it was released and it is yet to let me down.

I was a bit unsure when I saw Exo's avatar but I am assured that is not a virus - although I have my doubts. :(

This is interesting to me as well, since time with Kaspersky has run out now. Between Spyware Doctor, Malwarebytes, and a few Firefox add ons, I think I should be good for a little while...assuming I can stay away from shady websites.

Not really crazy about anything from Microsoft, but if it's really that good, then maybe I may give it a test drive for myself.

You shouldn't use two antivirus (or firewalls for that matter) at the same time as they may (probably will) conflict with each other.

Personally I use MSE, Zone Alarm's free firewall, Malwarebyte's Anti Malware, Virus Effect Remover and Spybot Search and Destroy. All free, none conflict with each other, all great imo

What really? They seem to be working fine with each other though  , hmm maybe I will do some research on google about running 2 at once.

It's a waste of system resources, can corrupt files if they both try to access it at the same time, and they like to call each other viruses.

MSE is good, my complaints for it are the lack of preventative technologies and a full system scan is insanely slow.

full system scan is insanely slow.

I actually found it faster at scanning all my drives then Malwarebytes or Super Anti Spyware. I usually only tell it to scan my C, and H drive though (H is where I keep all my programs). Scanning all ~4TB is never any fun and takes around 5-6 hours. (I scan everything maybe once every 3 weeks)

this... MSE is free, no non-sense on the interface, and isn't bloated (at least yet) like other anti-virus programs are [become]

It's slower than Malwarebytes (at least for me), but faster than SAS (which isn't saying much, sooooo slow), but those two are antimalware

MSE is slower than both Avast! and Spyware Doctor+AV in my experience (I've never timed any other AVs as IMO there are no others to consider).

Don't bother looking at anything else. It's free and beats most paid AV programs. Plus it's easy to shut off, a great feature for offline gaming (Keep it on if you are gaming online!).

XP was a good OS, but don't you think it's time for an upgrade? Don't let Vista taint your thoughts on W7.

Don't feel like dishing out 50-100 bucks when I have an OS that works perfectly fine.

MSE doesn't protect against infection much, which is one of my gripes with it, but if you consider any antivirus to be a first line of defense, you're not using your antivirus properly. Your antivirus is your last line of defense and mostly reactive to when you goof.
