deadspace 2 was way better than the first in my opinion and it was first one that had the "idenitity crisis" being that it seemed to borrow a lot from other horror games especially doom 3 and resident evil, it was original in some ways, i think the tone and everything of the first is also great, but the second one improved on so much and set the game into its official identity set standards and went way beyond the greatness of the first, the 3rd is gonna be even better
Totally agree, and at least you gave reasons why you thought the first had a so called ID crisis. It was also far more plain and repetitious than the 2nd, and had horrible mouse support. Most that liked the 1st more than the 2nd claimed it had more and better shock horror moments. I didn't happen to think so. If anything, the bulk of the gameplay in DS 2 had more moments of trepidation, many with dark visual shock factor, like the long dark hallway with the brutes in the first part of Chapter 10, then the narrow dark hallway before going to fix the centrifuge with lots of different monsters attacking.
The boss battles with the Tripods and Tormentor were very good too. In DS 1, most of the battles were too easy. You could just sit back and shoot from a distance. When a boss fight required evasive maneuvers, it was easy as pie to just strafe back and forth. DS 2's hardcoe mode allows only 3 saves the whole game, which gives it more replay value and a feeling of more fear and challenge. It also has New Game+, and a LOT of players now refer to being able to carry over your gear and status as New Game+ in other games.
Personally I think Viceral's concepts with Dead Space, of course beginning with the first, are very original. Besides the above, their use of holograms and suit lights for pickups, interactive items, coms, stasis and health are ingenious and leave the screen less cluttered and more cinematic. The 2nd game improves visually and in gameplay, with a good variety of maps, excellent zero g representation, and even more dynamic cinematic moments. I still have that scene stuck in my head where you eject from a launch pod and fly through space with your suit while dodging space debris, culminating with a crash through a roof and use of boot thrusters to decelerate.
Dead Space 2 is still one of my top picks for Game of the Year. The only one that comes close is Dead Island.
