Well, this is an FPS, not an RPG... and I think the silent protagonist approach works in more action oriented games (although I love RPGs too). Far Cry 2 was a great open-world FPS with a silent protagonist (only the respawning guards were slightly annoying), and Half-Life 1/2, Bio/System Shock, Doom 3 had silent protagonists too, though they were more linear affairs (and you still had some story choices in Bioshock). It never bothered me during these games that the main character doesn't talk, in many ways it's more immersive.
The reason I'm excited for Rage is b/c it's finally another shooter that does not use the extremely narrow, extremely linear CoD formula, where you can do everything only as the devs intented, can only move at the pace the devs intended, and they constantly push you forward. Oh, and don't get me started on the "infinite enemies till you move to the next checkpoint when they magically disappear" [censored]... (If you are going to do a linear shooter copy HL not CoD...). I want some freedom, and Rage gives me that.
I really enjoyed shooters like Stalker, Crysis, Far Cry 2 recently, where you can explore the environment and approach enemies as you'd like, and Rage looks like a fantastic shooter in that vein. If you are essentially looking for a CRPG, Rage was never going to be a game for you (play The Witcher 2 and Skyrim though).
