Id to release Doom 3 source code

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 12:06 am

John Carmack confirmed today that Id plans on releasing the Doom 3 source code to the public. He has received permission from Zenimax and he plans on releasing the source code after Id finishes and releases RAGE.

Carmack then challenged other developers to release their source code for study as well, saying it helps the developer community.

The well-known developer has often said in the past that he planned on releasing the code, but this is the first time that he has declared an approximate timeframe.

Nice that ID still does this, even after growing big enough to be considered evil :P

The Doom 3 modding community is pretty large already and there are a lot of talented people there so I can't wait to see what they'll do when they get their hands on the source code

I know it's considered healthy to be optimistic but that's taking it a bit far :P

Excellent I plan to see many new things...possibly some horrifying things. Already I can forsee a Hello Kitty version where you go on a killing spree.

Does the release of the source code mean we may eventually see a standalone version of http://www.thedarkmod.com/? Maybe more people would develop missions for it.

It's great to see id doing this, can't wait to see what mods come out of this. As well, I'm glad he challenged other dev's to do the same.

It's good to see some of the old traditions of id continue

I love what was able to be done when previous source codes were released

as long as the mod doesn't come with Id-made resources (Models, textures, maps) that sort of thing

id software really is one of the most generous companies I've seen. They're definitely one of my favorites because of it (not to mention their awesome games, of course).

Yeah, good to see them not only allowing ID to continue its tradition, but also doing the Arx release . Its certainly good for PR.

All previous Elder Scrolls games either have had their code lost* or have used a third party engine. The former poses obvious problems, and the latter would require said engine to be released by the people who make money from sell the code ;).

*Daggerfall for sure (if we believe what they claim :P), and I'm lumping the rest in for convenience.

EDIT: If you're interested, http://openmw.org/ aims to create a completely new, open source engine for Morrowind, and the http://dungeonhack.sourceforge.net/ project is descended from attempts to do much the same for Daggerfall and aims to create an original game with some ambitious goals.

Never heard of Dungeonhack, but http://xlengine.com/ (For Daggerfall and a few other games) appears to be making good progress.
