John Carmack: Rage may be the best looking game this generat

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 8:07 am

In an interview, with Nowgamer, tech director at ID Software, John Carmack, made some pretty bold claims about the company’s upcoming game, Rage. Check out a little of what John had to say below.

“When we finally got to a point where we had a locked frame rate and people could sit down and play it and feel it, it did become something that people could recognise. It’s debateable right now on this generation because it’s hard to do something that looks cutting edge while going at 60 frames per second, because I think that an argument can be made that we’re the best-looking game on this generation of consoles, the fact that we do it two times the frame rate of most of the competitors points out how hard that work was to get to that point.”
“But I really stuck with the fact we’ve got a lot more performance now than we had. I do a lot of these experiences where I do these A and B comparisons and ask “How does this look when we spend twice as much in fragment processing”? etc. and it is my belief that for an intense action game that you get more from going from 30 to 60 than from adding double as much work into the graphics picture that’s drawn there..”
Now, we don’t expect a developer to talk down an upcoming huge release, but what do you guys think about John Carmack’s statement? Will Rage be the best looking game this generation? Let us know below.

From he interview:

"it is not about challenging the people; it’s our job to entertain the people."

Don't worry I'm sure they will have their signature Nightmare mode difficulty. This is all PR stuff meant to attract non id fans.

You haven't seen Skyrim, I'm guessing? This and skyrim are pretty much tied because they're new engines with great graphic designers. It'll be pretty cool.

I have played them all and own everything from Doom on up. This game will be just another id game. The bar has been raised by some very good post apocalyptic games and Rage is shaping up to be nothing special.

I am disappointed by this and will say so.

Yup. Just fired up the brutal Russian mod DMX-DKZ mod. Very fine so far. The Cave entrance level is amazingly tough. ;)

The second half of this discussion just got deleted. If you can't keep it civil, there's no need to post. :stare:

Insulting individuals or groups of members and name calling are flames. Any remark that is made to insult another member or group of members will be considered a flame and thus you may receive a warning for it.
Calling people a troll or an apologist for instance can both be considered a flame as can calling someone stupid or ADD. Attacking Xbox players, PS3 players or PC players is not allowed and calling them "console kiddies" or in anyway indicating someone is in some way a lesser person because of their choice is considered a flame here.

I was wondering if there was a tech demo video out there explaining all the features in the engine including Megatextures. All the vids I have seen usually only talk about MegaTexture. Is there a video that does a complete run down? For some reason the death animations in this game look amazing. Like in some videos where the players shoots on of the running bandits in the head he just slows down and falls to the ground. I want to know more about these things. May be Id should do one of the tech demos videos like Epic and Crytek do but with J.Carmack with all his geek talk. I'm sure all the nerds will really go crazy over it. I know I will

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K-_qngw0Bs

look at the vid from 1.24 onwards. Look at how the bandits just fall to the headshots. I like those death animations coupled with physics.

Yea but this new version of UE3 is not for this generation. No console has Dx11 support. On PC it may work from now itself but not on the consoles.

Funnily PC has no real generation and even if there were they have always been dictated by Id engines.

I stand corrected. Wasn't thinking of the consoles.

You have no idea at all. NARODNAYA SOLYANKADMX-DKZ is tougher than anything you could imagine let alone play.

I'll leave you to fantasize.

I know the "detail" in graphics overall isn't ahead of games like Crisis2, but I think alot of what he meant was the the ENTIRE aspect of graphics. What the entire engine was stressed on wasn't the superior realism in appearance of a game, it was about the megatextures.

I've played many games with great terrains and worlds, but at some point you see the bad tiled textures. Rage will be the 1st game we see with absolutely NO repeated tiles, no repetetive landscape, but an entire world that's unique in every square foot, which is something ALL games after Rage should have, IMO.

But yeah I know the "realism" in the graphics isn't king over games like Crisis2, and the animations aren't as shocking anymore either, and even the AI is amazing sometimes, but in some parts a bit bad.

All I know is that Rage has the best and most proffesional world crafted entirely by artists, and that's probably what Carmack means when he speaks of the "looks." In fact, he and Willits repeatedly say "hand crafted world" and such, making it a big deal.

Rage is definitely among the best looking games out there, technically its fantastic, but of course the art style is very subjective. I really like it, gives me a Mad Max vide, plus I'm still not tired of post-apocalyptic settings (why are people complaining about these anyway, there aren't that many, especially compared to the millions of modern warfare military stuff, which people seem to go crazy about every time).
